2024 marks 50 years of cooperation between ASEAN and Australia, a significant milestone in the relationship between the two sides. To commemorate this event, the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit will take place in Melbourne from 4-6 March.
Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr. Andrew Goledzinowski, affirmed that ASEAN plays a central role in Australia’s future. According to him, the region is in the process of becoming a global economic power and political center. Australia values its partnership with ASEAN and wishes to strengthen cooperation in many areas.
The Australian Government has expressed its commitment to being a trusted partner of ASEAN. In fact, it has invested heavily in the region, with two-way trade reaching A$178 billion in 2022. Australia also supports many development projects to address common challenges such as climate change.
The policy, “Invest: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040”, is designed to increase trade and investment between Australia and ASEAN. The strategy also aims to open up opportunities for businesses on both sides and promote regional economic development.
The Special Summit will focus on four key areas:
- Business: promoting two-way trade and investment.
- Future leaders: nurturing the next generation of leaders on both sides.
- Climate change and clean energy: discussing solutions to common challenges.
- Maritime cooperation: strengthening maritime security cooperation.
The relationship between Australia and Vietnam has been growing in recent years. The two countries are moving towards upgrading their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and enhancing cooperation in areas such as climate change, digital transformation, trade and investment, critical minerals and education.
The relationship between ASEAN and Australia is one of mutual benefit and cooperation. Both sides are committed to working together to address common challenges and promote regional economic development.
I am proud to highlight the strength of the Vietnam-Australia partnership, and to show the genuine hospitality of our people to the Vietnamese delegation in my beautiful country.
Ambassador Andrew Goledzinowski
We recognise the unique and prominent role that education plays in our bilateral relationship. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese students have benefited from Australia’s commitment to education in Vietnam, particularly through RMIT’s significant contribution to the development of Vietnamese capabilities. There is still much untapped potential and we look forward to continuing to work together to deliver the best outcomes for students and institutions in both countries.
