When he was in middle school, one day Hung collapsed in class and was later diagnosed with 'brittle bone disease'. His mother ran around everywhere to find a cure for him, and with his will to study, Hung reached his dream of becoming a TV MC.

At 5 p.m., the school bell rang, and Nguyen Ngoc Hung (Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak province) hurriedly returned to the dormitory of the College of Radio and Television II, ate a pack of instant noodles, and started working part-time at a restaurant on Nguyen Van Qua street (District 12, Ho Chi Minh City).

"Every night I work 4 hours, I receive 100,000 VND, I will save some money to reduce the burden on my mother at home," Hung shared.

Don't surrender to fate

The dormitory room where Hung lives is about 15 square meters wide for 4 students with a few simple items. There are a few boxes of instant noodles in the room, but "sometimes the whole room also treats themselves to a plate of rice with ribs for 30,000 - 35,000 VND/portion".

Mrs. Tran Thi Vinh, Hung's mother, said that her family was originally from the martial arts land of Tay Son district, Binh Dinh province. The family had little land, and the weather in the Central region was sunny and windy all year round, so the crops failed and they could not make a living. The couple discussed moving to Ea Ning to find a chance to change their lives.

Selling their house and borrowing from relatives, the couple was able to buy a small piece of land to grow crops, so they had enough to eat and wear.

However, hardship does not spare the needy. 13 years ago, her husband suddenly had a stroke while gardening and passed away. The burden fell on Mrs. Vinh's shoulders. After taking care of her husband's funeral, she rushed back and forth, doing whatever jobs were hired to support her two children.

I thought the life of the three of us would be peaceful and happy, but in 6th grade, Hung suddenly collapsed while in class. His mother took him to the doctor for a check-up, and the doctor diagnosed Hung with " brittle bone ".

Mrs. Vinh said that at that time, she had to borrow money and run around everywhere to treat her son's illness. Luckily, the disease was detected early, treated promptly, and combined with her willpower, the illness improved. However, due to the after-effects of the disease, Hung still limps.

Three years ago, Hung's sister passed the university entrance exam, she was both happy and worried, now Hung continues to study far from home. "I still tell my children, no matter how poor they are, they must overcome it, they must study to have less hardship in the future," said Mrs. Vinh.

Lack of money can be managed, lack of education can hardly rise up

Hung added that on the day he received the notice of admission to the College of Radio and Television II, he was very happy because he had touched his dream. However, when he returned home, seeing his mother worried about not knowing where to get the money to pay for tuition, Hung hesitated whether to go to school or not. Some neighbors advised Hung to drop out of school because his sister was in her third year at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City.

"Seeing me hesitate, my mother asked me to go to school because without money I could manage, without education it would be difficult to rise up, I would always suffer. Her advice gave me the motivation and determination to pursue my passion. My mother also always taught me to live honestly, to pursue my passion because many people who had more difficulties have overcome and succeeded," Hung shared.

From his mother's encouragement, Hung "glass bones" determined to carry his backpack to Saigon to conquer his dream of becoming a TV MC. The day he got on the bus, his mother stood watching him, holding his hands and telling Hung to be strong. As the bus went far, his mother's face was tearful, an image that Hung will remember forever.

"My mother often reminded both of us to try to study hard and get ahead in life, to escape poverty. She said not to care too much about what other people think, to always try to overcome circumstances to change how others see us," Hung said.

The day he went to the city, Hung promised his mother he would work extra to pay for his tuition and is trying to do so.

"I consider myself an extrovert, good at communication, and like media-related jobs, so I chose College of Radio and Television II. I will try to study well to achieve my dream of becoming a radio announcer and earning an income to take care of my mother," Hung confidently said.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Quyen - teacher at Y Jut High School (Cu Kuin district) - said that Hung is a very hard-working student, not afraid of difficulties in studying, not discouraged, always knows how to strive in life.

"As a homeroom teacher, I also understand the hardships of Hung's family. Knowing that Hung passed the entrance exam to the College of Radio and Television II, I am very happy and hope that he will study hard so as not to let down his mother's efforts," Ms. Quyen hoped.
