As of September 21, in Nong Thuong Commune, Bac Kan City, the total number of people hospitalized due to symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and headache has increased to 54 cases, mainly students and staff of Nong Thuong Primary and Secondary School. Up to now, there are no critical cases, most of the patients have stabilized and are receiving intensive care.

According to the latest report from the Bac Kan City Medical Center, up to now, more than 70 people have shown the above symptoms. Of these, 54 people have been hospitalized for monitoring and treatment, the remaining cases are being cared for at home under the supervision of the health sector.

Preliminary investigation shows that the first case was discovered on the morning of September 19 when a student had symptoms of fever, stomachache and fatigue. This student was taken to the Pediatrics Department, Bac Kan General Hospital for monitoring.

At the same time, at noon on September 19, the school organized the first lunch of the school year with 88 students and 5 teachers eating the following dishes: rice, fried chicken, vegetable soup, stir-fried potatoes and watermelon. By the evening of the same day, 1 student started to have symptoms of a sore throat, but did not vomit or have a fever and still went to school as usual on September 20.

By September 20, the number of cases with signs and symptoms had increased rapidly. But of the 41 students who showed symptoms on September 20, eight had not attended lunch. Therefore, factors other than food were also considered to determine the cause.

The Bac Kan provincial health sector has quickly implemented measures such as preliminary investigation of cases, counseling teachers and families on how to care for and monitor patients. The Nong Thuong Commune Health Station has been assigned to monitor the progress of cases and report daily.

Authorities have also sprayed the entire school area with Cloramin B. Blood and medical samples are being collected to determine the cause.

While there is no final conclusion on the cause, the People's Committee of Bac Kan City has directed functional units to implement disease prevention measures to avoid the spread of the disease. The Department of Education and Training of Bac Kan City has also been asked to consider the possibility of letting students stay home from school if the situation becomes complicated.

The local health sector has advised people and students to limit large gatherings, avoid direct contact with people showing symptoms of the disease, eat cooked food and drink boiled water, and maintain personal hygiene, especially washing hands with soap. People need to understand the actual situation, not panic but also not be subjective, to minimize the risk of disease and avoid spreading in the community.
