The 21st meeting on cross-border drug prevention and control coordination

Dien Bien TV - On March 26, in Dien Bien Phu city, the Steering Committee for Drug Crime Prevention and Control of 8 provinces of Vietnam and Laos held the 21st Conference on Coordination of Cross-border Drug Prevention and Control in 2025. Attending the Conference were 4 provinces of Vietnam including: Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Son La, Dien Bien and 4 provinces of Laos including: Hua Phan, Xieng Khouang, Luang Prabang, Phong Sa Ly. Comrade Vu A Bang, Vice Chairman of Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee chaired the conference.

The overview report on the situation and results of drug prevention and control coordination between 8 provinces of Vietnam and Laos clearly shows that: In the 8 provinces of the 2 countries, there are still 24 communes and districts with drug-related problems, with over 26,300 drug addicts. In the past time, implementing the Memorandum of Understanding at the 20th Conference, the drug prevention and control forces of the provinces have proactively and effectively deployed the investigation work, identified drug-related crime routes, areas, and subjects; on that basis, developed plans and solutions to combat and eradicate.

In 2024, the functional forces of 8 provinces discovered and arrested nearly 4,560 cases with over 6,100 criminals. Of which, the Vietnamese provinces alone discovered nearly 4,300 cases, arresting over 5,650 subjects; the Lao side discovered 310 cases, arresting 450 subjects. The total amount of evidence seized included: Nearly 220kg of heroin, over 32kg of opium, over 530kg of synthetic drugs and nearly 60kg of marijuana...

At the conference, delegates focused on discussing and evaluating the results achieved; at the same time, frankly acknowledged the shortcomings, limitations, difficulties and problems that arose; on that basis, proposed solutions and directions for coordination to further improve the effectiveness of drug prevention and control work on the Vietnam - Laos border. Representatives of 8 provinces signed the 21st memorandum of understanding on coordination in the fight against cross-border drug prevention and control in 2025.

In his concluding remarks at the conference, Mr. Vu A Bang, Vice Chairman of the Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee, hoped that after the conference, the heads of delegations and functional units would proactively advise and develop implementation plans suitable to the conditions and realities of each locality. At the same time, he requested the Ministry of Public Security and central ministries and branches to continue to pay attention to and support border provinces in general and Dien Bien province in particular in terms of funding, means, and technical equipment to support the forces fighting against cross-border drug trafficking to operate more effectively.

In the afternoon of the same day, delegates attending the conference came to offer flowers and incense to commemorate the heroic martyrs at the Martyrs' Temple at Dien Bien Phu Battlefield./.
