On the morning of July 31, 2024, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the Southern Institute of Fisheries Economics and Planning to organize the 2nd Workshop on "Binh Thuan Province Marine Aquaculture Development Project".
Also attending were 40 delegates who are leaders of relevant departments, branches, People's Committees of coastal districts, towns and cities; representatives of a number of businesses, households raising and trading aquatic products in the province.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Van Chien - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the potential for marine aquaculture in the province is very large, especially in the context of increasingly depleted aquatic resources, raw materials for processing and export depend on imports from foreign countries... Based on practical requirements, the implementation of the "Project for developing marine aquaculture in Binh Thuan province to 2030, with a vision to 2045" is very necessary. In the coming time, the province's Fisheries Department will drastically reduce the means of exploiting coastal aquatic products, contributing to solving the problem of converting occupations from coastal aquatic exploitation to more sustainable marine aquaculture. Marine aquaculture is also a great opportunity to restore the ecosystem that is being depleted by overexploitation by humans.
In addition, the implementation of this project also aims to concretize the Project "Developing marine aquaculture nationwide to 2030, with a vision to 2045"; zoning and rearranging marine farming areas reasonably, overcoming limitations and shortcomings, promoting strengths and advantages and ensuring the livelihoods of local people. In addition, it will attract investment enterprises, creating motivation for marine farming in Binh Thuan province to become a modern and sustainable marine farming industry, effectively exploiting the potential of marine aquaculture in the province...
At the workshop, delegates, scientists, state management agencies, businesses, and fishermen who are raising aquatic products focused on assessing the current status of marine aquaculture in Binh Thuan province in the past time, the plan for marine aquaculture in the coming time, the difficulties being encountered and proposed solutions to implement the project in a scientific and practical manner.
It is known that marine aquaculture has created livelihoods and increased income for fishermen in coastal and island areas in the province, including many fishermen who work in coastal fisheries who have switched to marine aquaculture. Currently, marine aquaculture is concentrated in the districts of Tuy Phong, Bac Binh, Ham Thuan Nam, Phu Quy and Phan Thiet city, the main aquaculture products are cobia, pomfret, bream, snails, abalone, clams, groupers, lobsters, etc.
