Provincial Oriental Medicine Association: Developing and preserving traditional medicine

Mr. Dang Huu Loc - Chairman of the Provincial Oriental Medicine Association said that currently, the association has formed a 3-level network; 100% of districts, towns and cities have association activities. In recent years, along with improving the quality of treatment, the association has maintained quite good propaganda and education work to raise awareness for officials and members about the association's core role in the development of oriental medicine in the province; preserving and promoting the precious assets of traditional medicine.

Along with the examination and treatment of traditional medicine using the old method, the association cooperates with private traditional medicine establishments, the Provincial Traditional Medicine - Rehabilitation Hospital, and the traditional medicine department at hospitals to implement the method of combining traditional medicine and modern medicine through the use of X-ray results, tests, CT scans... to support diagnosis. At the same time, applying modern equipment such as: Electroacupuncture, shortwave, ultrasound... to treat degenerative joint diseases, sciatica, spinal pain, hemiplegia due to stroke, 7th nerve palsy... Notably, the association has applied the method of combining Eastern and Western medicine to support cancer treatment, helping to prolong life; combining Western medicine with acupressure in the treatment of facial paralysis, bringing good recovery results.

To improve the quality of traditional medicine practitioners, every year, the association cooperates with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the Institute of Traditional Medicine in Ho Chi Minh City to organize many training courses, fostering professional knowledge of traditional medicine for more than 100 officials and members. Associations at all levels organize conferences for members to exchange experiences in medical examination and treatment, and share valuable medicinal recipes. The provincial Oriental Medicine Association alone has collected and preserved more than 300 good medicinal recipes for treating musculoskeletal diseases, nervous breakdown, rheumatism, cirrhosis, ascites, asthma, gallstones, etc. District, town and city associations have collected and provided more than 100 medicinal herbs to support medical stations in building model medicinal herb gardens. At the same time, the association has coordinated and created conditions for businesses, organizations and individuals to invest in the field of traditional medicine, medicinal herb production, and conservation and development of valuable medicinal gene sources. Currently, there are 223 traditional medicine clinics, 2 enterprises specializing in the production and trading of oriental medicine that are members of the Oriental Medicine Association...

However, according to Mr. Dang Huu Loc, the activities of the Provincial Association of Traditional Medicine are currently facing many difficulties. The facilities of some traditional medicine units have not met the development needs; human resources are limited, especially the next generation in the field of traditional medicine; the preservation and development of medicinal resources are also facing difficulties. Along with that, the socialization of traditional medicine in the province has not developed in terms of investment level, not diverse in types, mainly developing traditional medicine clinics; there is no international cooperation in developing traditional medicine...

To effectively carry out the work of inheriting, preserving and developing traditional medicine and pharmacy in the province, Mr. Dang Huu Loc proposed that leaders at all levels continue to pay attention to supporting investment in facilities and equipment for traditional medicine and pharmacy establishments; have a mechanism to support training and fostering human resources, especially young doctors who wish to study traditional medicine and pharmacy. At the same time, promote propaganda about the benefits of traditional medicine, combined with modern medicine.
