Current industry opportunities

Passionate about art but still trying to complete and soon graduate from tourism, Thang Chau Phong (student of Ton Duc Thang University) also studies acting class in the evening.

Phong shared: "The two professions are almost unrelated, but the tourism industry trains skills that are useful for performing arts such as fluent communication and a good, clear voice."

Currently working in a marketing-related and design-oriented job, Ngoc Lan (a final-year student, majoring in public relations, a non-public university) said that her current major has subjects related to communication such as writing, design, photography, etc., so she already has basic skills when starting a new major.

Thanh Truc completed her vocational certificate to achieve her dream.

Wishing to become an editor and content creator, Thanh Truc (3rd year student, majoring in educational management, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) studied for a journalism certificate in 2 and a half months and completed it in her 2nd year of university.

Truc said that because she studies online on weekends, she can balance her time with other assignments for her major. The female student also actively participates in cultural, sports and academic activities, especially writing competitions, to improve her expression skills.

Thu An (4th year student, primary education, Saigon University) is very passionate about graphic design, so she has applied related subjects in the program to design games and images to put into lectures to attract students. "Drawing class is also a compulsory subject of the program, so I learned about shading, dividing the layout, and useful knowledge in my current industry to pursue my passion for design," An said.

Although she no longer feels it is suitable, Minh Thi (majoring in human resource management, Vietnam Aviation Academy) continues to pursue her major and develop herself in languages such as English and Chinese to switch to tourism and plans to study for a tour guide license.

Study a related major

According to Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Huong, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Education, Saigon University, studying a related major is quite common among students today.

This means that students who change their major need to make an effort to improve their competitiveness compared to students in the same major.

"The trend of choosing human resources in the current market is quite open. What is important is that students have an open mind and knowledge to boldly enter the market and assert themselves. If they are capable enough, whether they change their major or choose a related major to pursue their dream job, there will still be companies willing to recruit them," Ms. Huong shared.

Regarding the solution for students who do not study the right major, Ms. Huong said that they can choose to take the exam and retake the major that they are passionate about or "take a detour".

"When re-studying, students must clearly identify their own resources such as economic conditions, time, health, and should have a specific plan to improve the knowledge of the entrance exam. However, consider studying a related major," Ms. Huong advised.

Thanh Truc reached the top 30 in the writing category in the "The biggest exam of life" contest.

According to Dr. Huong, finding a passionate job when not in a major is a long process, students need to prepare a serious learning attitude to complete it effectively.

"If you don't have enough resources, students should do well with what they have, grasp and thoroughly research career opportunities in their current field of study. They should also accurately re-evaluate their own abilities and interests to consider the suitability of the career," said Dr. Huong.

Be responsible for your choices

Choosing to retake the exam to enter the desired major is the solution many students expressed on social networking forums.

Although people around him advised him to try to complete his current major and get a degree, BM (a second-year student, participating in forums) said he still chose to retake the exam because he felt it was a worthy investment for his future. However, this student was also worried about studying 2 years late, making it difficult to compete with peers who already had experience.

Pausing her current career for a few years to seriously invest in a new one, Ngoc Lan said that although it takes a long time to start over, having to do a job she doesn't like will be even more stressful.

According to Thu An, the most important thing in this journey is to always take responsibility for your choices to nurture your motivation. "First of all, it took me 4 years to focus on completing my education degree and at least 2 more years to get a design degree. However, I will have at least two degrees and plan to integrate two education and design degrees, and continue my studies to become a design teacher," An said.
