Quang Hai and Van Hau are two top players in Vietnamese football. However, both stars are currently injured and cannot participate in the first stage of the Vietnamese team's journey to conquer the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. This is a significant loss in terms of strength for coach Philippe Troussier's team.
Difficult to fill Van Hau's void
Doan Van Hau's injury is not progressing well. Therefore, the defender born in 1999 had to go to Singapore for heel surgery and it will take 3 to 6 months to recover. Van Hau will certainly not be able to return in time for the 2023 Asian Cup (in January 2024) and is unlikely to play in the 2 matches against Indonesia in March 2024 (in the 2nd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup). "In the left center-back position, there is Phan Tuan Tai. Meanwhile, on the left flank, there is competition from Vo Minh Trong, Trieu Viet Hung and possibly Khuat Van Khang," said commentator Vu Quang Huy.
Doan Van Hau must go to Singapore for heel surgery
In terms of personnel, to fill the position of Doan Van Hau, the French coach does not need to worry. However, the above players will hardly replace the professional gap left by the defender from Thai Binh. Van Hau is a versatile player, when he can play well in the role of a winger or a center back. The defender born in 1999 has an ideal physique and good speed. The star of the Hanoi Police Club is considered quite comprehensive, when competing well and participating in effective attacks.
Meanwhile, the alternatives to Van Hau at the moment in the Vietnam national team are only acceptable. Trieu Viet Hung has not left an impression since being given a chance by Coach Troussier at the FIFA Days in October. Young player Vo Minh Trong has played quite well, but is still inexperienced and has been gradually "transplanted" by Coach Troussier for the future. Van Khang has not shown much when playing as a left-back. Tuan Tai, who is good at sticking to the left wing, was arranged to play as a left-back to serve the playing style that the French coach is aiming for. However, the defender of Viettel Club is not a "tough" player, so he often shows his limitations when facing opponents with strong attacks.
Minh Trong (17) has been used a lot recently by coach Troussier in the left-back position.
In this training session, Coach Troussier named Pham Xuan Manh. The new player of Hanoi Club is expected to create competition in the left wing role in the team and leave his mark in terms of expertise. The advantage of the former SLNA midfielder is his strength and determination.
Many alternatives to Quang Hai
Quang Hai was injured in the match between Vietnam and Uzbekistan in October. The striker born in 1997 suffered a torn calf and is expected to rest for about 5 weeks, so he cannot play with his teammates in the first 2 matches of the 2nd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
The former star of Hanoi FC is a player with a lot of potential. However, since leaving Pau FC (France) to return to the V-League, Quang Hai has not been able to regain his best form. The absence of the 26-year-old player is clearly a loss for the Vietnamese team, but coach Troussier does not have to worry too much.
Quang Hai will return to the Vietnamese national team in the next training session.
Regarding Quang Hai's replacement, commentator Quang Huy commented: "If Hung Dung and Tuan Anh keep the midfield, then in the attacking midfielder position, Hoang Duc is always a good choice when Quang Hai is not available. Van Quyet's return is also worth waiting for. As for the right forward position, Van Toan is a face that can meet the requirements when Quang Hai is absent."
Besides, potential 20-year-old players such as Nguyen Dinh Bac (Quang Nam Club) and Nguyen Thanh Nhan (PVF-CAND) are also waiting for coach Troussier to give them the opportunity to show their skills.
The first two matches are very important for coach Troussier's team.
In short, Coach Troussier may have a bigger headache about replacing Doan Van Hau, as this player has to take a long-term break. Meanwhile, Quang Hai's injury is not really serious and he will return soon.
The Vietnamese team will train in Hanoi and is expected to travel to the Philippines on November 12. Coach Troussier's team will play their opening match against the Philippines at 6 p.m. on November 16, before returning home to host Iraq at My Dinh Stadium at 7 p.m. on November 21.
