On the evening of September 12, U23 Vietnam was unexpectedly held to a draw by U23 Singapore in the final match of Group C of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers.
Coach Troussier admitted his mistake after U23 Vietnam's draw with Singapore.
Talking about this match, coach Troussier said that the red shirt players did not play well when they missed many good opportunities.
At the same time, the French strategist admitted that he himself was at fault for encouraging his players to play more freely.
“The result of the match was not what we wanted. In terms of all parameters such as ball control, number of chances created, number of shots, U23 Vietnam completely dominated the opponent, we should have won.
I think because they have already qualified, the players' determination and spirit have decreased. This makes them lose focus in some situations. This is a good lesson for them to improve their damage and open up scoring opportunities.
Personally, I am also at fault for encouraging the players to play more freely and comfortably,” Coach Troussier admitted.
Speaking more about the above match, the French strategist said that U23 Vietnam is very good at taking advantage of set pieces.
In the match against U23 Singapore, the red team also scored 2 goals from similar situations.
However, Mr. Troussier said that if we want Vietnamese football to develop further, we need to cherish open play.
Meanwhile, despite being eliminated with only 2 points after three matches, coach Nazri Nasir still felt proud of his players for holding U23 Vietnam to a draw.
“I am proud of the players. I wanted them to play with the highest spirit against U23 Vietnam even though this was a difficult match. My students did it.”
U23 Vietnam has ended its journey in the 2024 U23 Asian qualifiers with 7 points and first place in Group C.
With this achievement, coach Troussier and his team have tickets to go straight to the 2024 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar next year.
