Malaysian football fans were both surprised and somewhat regretful after the Korean coach Kim Pan-gon unexpectedly resigned as the national team coach on July 16. And they have paid special attention to supporting Mr. Park Hang-seo to replace his compatriot Kim Pan-gon.
Coach Park Hang-seo receives support to lead the Malaysian team
In a poll initiated by Astro Arena, Park Hang-seo was named as the coach expected to replace Kim Pan-gon in the Malaysian national team. The former coach of the Vietnamese national team received more than 60% of the votes from about 400 voters as of noon on July 18.
Although the voting still lasts for nearly a day, Mr. Park Hang-seo's votes have far surpassed Pau Marti Vicente, who was recently appointed by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to replace Kim Pan-gon.
Pau Marti received only 11.4% of the vote. In fact, the Spanish coach's vote was also lower than Kim Pan-gon's predecessor, Tan Cheng Hoe (12.6% of the vote).
Another name that made it to the poll was Nafuzi Zain, who is currently in charge of Kedah Darul Aman. Coach Nafuzi Zain came second in the poll with 15.2% of the votes.
Not only do Malaysian football fans hope that coach Park Hang-seo will revive Harimau Malaya (the nickname of the Malaysian national team), some football experts in this country also have high expectations for the former coach of the Vietnamese national team.
Mr. Kim Pan-gon suddenly resigned as coach of the Malaysian team.
Malaysian football expert Dr Pekan Ramli assessed that Mr Park Hang-seo is suitable to continue Kim Pan-gon's work. "Park Hang-seo can be considered by FAM because he not only develops the Vietnamese team in a better direction but also develops the character of the players themselves. The coach's job is not only to train the players on the field but also to develop their character in terms of discipline and fighting spirit," Ramli was quoted by Stadium Astro.
Ramli said he did not want to support local coaches, but the increasing competition in international football meant the Malaysian team needed foreign coaches. "We do not want local coaches because in international tournaments, we need coaches of stature and prestige. They understand the style of play of the opponents they will face and look at the technical aspects of the game to strategize," Ramli explained.
Coach Park Hang-seo is currently an advisor to Bac Ninh FC in Vietnam and is said to have turned down offers from several national teams such as India and Cambodia.
