On June 8, the final round of the 17th Traditional Horse Racing Tournament on the Bac Ha Plateau (Lao Cai) took place in an exciting and exciting atmosphere, attracting tens of thousands of locals and tourists to the central stadium of Bac Ha district to watch and cheer for the "barefoot" horsemen competing.
This is the most prominent activity of Bac Ha Cultural Tourism Week 2024.
The Final Round was attended by 32 athletes (jockeys) from highland villages in Bac Ha, Bat Xat districts (Lao Cai) and Ham Yen district (Tuyen Quang), who had successfully passed the qualifying round on June 1st.
On the final day, the athletes were divided into 6 knockout rounds with a distance of 1,500m to select the athletes to enter the round of 16; finally, the 4 best jockeys were selected to compete in the final.
Right after the opening ceremony, the ethnic minority men wearing helmets and sandals lying on the backs of their horses galloping on the racetrack gave the audience fierce competitions with excellent accelerations that have created a unique brand of the traditional Bac Ha horse racing tournament.
Tourist Nguyen Thi Huyen, Bao Nhai commune, Bac Ha, Lao Cai shared: "This is the second time I have come to Bac Ha. After 9 years of returning, I see that the horse racing atmosphere is getting more and more exciting, with many tourists from all over coming here. Bac Ha people are very enthusiastic and have prepared very carefully..."
Tourist Nguyen Minh Hien, from Hanoi, said: "This is the third time I have come to Bac Ha to watch horse racing. The district has organized this horse racing tournament very professionally and safely. I hope to maintain this horse racing tournament every year so that not only the people of Bac Ha district but also people across the country can learn more about the local traditional culture."
As a result, athlete (jockey) Trang A Gio (Bat Xat district) excellently won the championship; athlete Trang A Ma (Bat Xat district) won second prize; athlete Giang Seo Vu (Thai Giang Pho commune, Bac Ha district) won third prize and athlete Nong Van Toan (Hoang Thu Pho commune) won the encouragement prize.
At this year's tournament, the Organizing Committee also awarded the first team prize to the athletes of Thai Giang Pho commune (Bac Ha district), the second team prize to the athletes of Na Hoi commune (Bac Ha district) and the third team prize to the athletes of Ban Pho commune (Bac Ha district).
Ms. Chu Thi Duong, Vice Chairwoman of Bac Ha District People's Committee (Lao Cai), Head of the Organizing Committee, shared that the 17th Traditional Horse Racing Tournament was a success. The jockeys participating in this year's tournament were better than last year, and had better preparation.
This horse race attracts a lot of tourists and combines with the plum garden experience for visitors during the Bac Ha Cultural Tourism Week to give visitors the best experience.
Bac Ha horse racing festival was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2021.
This is the 17th year that the Bac Ha traditional horse racing tournament has been held to preserve and promote the unique cultural and sporting traditions of ethnic minorities, while creating unique cultural and tourism products to introduce to visitors to the Bac Ha white plateau.
On this occasion, a series of attractive events took place in the locality such as experiencing Tam Hoa plum picking; exploring the market; cultural and artistic activities at Bac Ha night market... serving the people and tourists.
