With research on the effects of the fruit and leaves of the mulberry tree, two students from the High School for Natural Sciences won third prize at the 2023 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

These two students are Nguyen Thi Mai Anh (grade 12 specialized in Math) and Nguyen Binh Giang (grade 12 specialized in Chemistry), High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University.

The project "Pharmacological effects on the central nervous system of essential oils of the fruit and leaves of the mulberry tree based on pharmacological networks" won the prize in the field of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CBIO). This is the only official prize of the Vietnamese delegation this year, according to the announcement on the morning of May 22 by the Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition, the project "Four-legged robot model to support search and rescue of people in landslide areas" by Le Minh Duc and Le Nguyen Trung Kien, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City, received a special prize, awarded by the science - technology and business organization (US Agency for International Development).

The Ministry said the ISEF organizing committee highly appreciated Vietnam's scientific research movement with many annual competitions attracting thousands of students to participate. This is a premise for Vietnam to improve the quality of scientific research in general and national and international competition projects in particular.

First held in 1952, the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is the world's premier science competition for high school students (grades 9-12). To participate in ISEF, contestants must be selected from local or national science competitions.

This year’s competition was held in the US from May 14 to 19, with the participation of more than 1,300 projects and 1,600 students from 61 countries and territories. With one third prize, Vietnam was among 33 countries and territories that won prizes.

Vietnam has participated in ISEF since 2012 and has won prizes. This year, 7 projects by 13 students competing in ISEF were selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from 143 projects by students nationwide.

During a meeting with students on May 12, Deputy Minister Nguyen Huu Do said that by participating in the competition, students have the opportunity to meet and connect with young scientists around the world. Many businesses also come to ISEF to seek innovative ideas.
