New US House Speaker Mike Johnson has called for a resolution supporting Israel in his first act as leader of the US House of Representatives.

Johnson said the first resolution passed by the House of Representatives was intended to support Israel because it was long overdue. The House passed the resolution by a 412-6 vote, reflecting strong support for the Jewish state in Congress. The non-binding measure reaffirmed the US commitment to Israel, called on Hamas to immediately cease attacks and release all hostages.
The Johnson-led House of Representatives must soon take up a measure that would take effect. Democratic President Joe Biden last week asked Congress to pass a $106 billion funding package that includes billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine, Taiwan and border security, along with $14.3 billion for Israel.
Like many other Republicans closely allied with former President Donald Trump, the new House Speaker is an opponent of Ukraine aid. Johnson affirmed his support for “conditional” aid to Ukraine, saying, “We’re working on this. We want accountability and we want the White House to have clear goals.”
