Chairwoman of Bach Khoa Ward People's Committee (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi) Hoang Thi Tuyet Lan said she has requested to suspend the operation of a vermicelli shop selling 3 bowls of vermicelli for 1.2 million VND on the first day of Tet.
On the evening of January 31 (the third day of Lunar New Year), speaking with Tuoi Tre Online, Ms. Hoang Thi Tuyet Lan, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Bach Khoa Ward (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi), said that immediately after receiving the information, she directed the ward police to clarify the case of the vermicelli soup restaurant at 54 Bach Mai Street being reported to have charged customers 1.2 million VND for 3 bowls of vermicelli soup on the night of January 29 (the first day of Lunar New Year).
If there is any 'price gouging', it will be dealt with.
"For now, I have requested to temporarily suspend the operation of this vermicelli shop from today to serve the verification and clarification of whether or not there is a problem of 'overcharging'. If there is 'overcharging', it will be handled according to regulations.
At the same time, we also request to temporarily suspend business to grasp information, contact customers to discuss specifically. The results of the discussion will have to be reported to the ward police for further resolution and handling," said Ms. Lan.
According to Ms. Lan, when invited to work, the owner was initially very cooperative and admitted that there were mistakes.
Specifically, the restaurant sells for 40,000 VND/bowl, but the owner "jokingly said 400,000 VND/bowl and quoted 1.2 million VND/3 bowls of vermicelli soup with crab".
Then, unexpectedly, the customer thought it was real and transferred 1.2 million VND.
"Based on information gathered from the surrounding neighbors, the owner of the restaurant committed to selling only 40,000 VND/bowl, but up until now, the owner sometimes jokes with customers that it is 400,000 VND/bowl.
The ward police have explained this matter and asked the owner of the establishment to specifically commit to this content. The owner of the establishment also said that he had proactively apologized on social media and wanted to meet the customer again to apologize and transfer the money back, but had not been able to do so...", Ms. Lan added.
The Chairman of Bach Mai Ward People's Committee also emphasized that although the explanation was "joking", it is clear that "joking" is not appropriate during this Tet holiday.
"This is a huge lesson for the owner of this establishment and also a general lesson. It's okay to joke around with someone you know, but it's inappropriate to joke around with customers who come to eat and drink on the first day of Tet.
We request that the owner of the facility use all means possible to contact the customer to apologize, coordinate, discuss and resolve the issue, and if there is any mistake, it will be handled according to regulations," Ms. Lan added.
The owner of the crab noodle shop... "jokes"
Previously, a social media user named Thu Nguyet shared on her personal page about her unhappy experience on the first night of Tet at the vermicelli soup restaurant at 54 Bach Mai, Bach Khoa ward, Hai Ba Trung district (Hanoi).
She said she went out for a late night snack with her father and brother without asking the price first. When it was time to pay, she was told the price was 1.2 million VND for 3 bowls of vermicelli soup with crab soup, which startled the whole family.
"Experience for those who go out during Tet: remember to ask the price first. Personally, I can't go back to 54 Bach Mai anymore. It's not cold on the 2nd day, but people's hearts are frozen. So, it's better to give up your belongings than your life" - Thu Nguyet added.
Immediately after the post, a user named Nguyen Oanh, claiming to be the owner's sister, said:
"Hello, I am the owner of a restaurant at 54 Bach Mai. If you eat three full bowls and have to pay 1.2 million, I invite you to immediately go to the police station to report it.
During Tet, my family only dares to increase the price by 5,000 to 10,000 for a bowl of noodles. The highest is only 60,000 for a full bowl. Are you happy that you post without pictures, without basis, affecting other people's business like that?"
However, after the customer provided evidence and a transfer receipt of 1.2 million VND, the restaurant owner apologized to the customer, asked for information to reconcile and returned the excess money.
This person said that his brother often jokes with customers and maybe the customer misunderstood, so he transferred the money like that.
