This is an annual activity organized by the school in collaboration with the American Agricultural Association, aiming to create a playground for students to practice their skills, exchange and connect, create meaningful activities, spread the beauty of Vietnamese culinary culture, build a spirit of mutual love, bring spring gifts to difficult circumstances in society, and contribute to the community's celebration of the Year of the Dragon.
Throughout thousands of years of history, Banh Chung has been a traditional symbol of Vietnamese culture during the Lunar New Year. The beauty of Banh Chung lies not only in its color, shape, and aroma, but also in the combination of natural ingredients such as sticky rice, banana leaves, dong leaves, beans, and meat, creating a unique flavor and distinct style. Banh Chung is not only a typical dish of our country's traditional culinary culture, but also a way to express gratitude to ancestors and family unity.
The "VI Traditional Cake Wrapping Competition" is an opportunity for students, staff of Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality and staff of Saigontourist Group to compete together. The event attracted a total of 30 teams including students majoring in Culinary Arts, Baking Arts, Hotel Management, Restaurant Management, Tour Guides, etc. to "compete" together, thereby spreading the way to make a traditional and unique dish of the Vietnamese people.
To participate in the contest, the teams must learn how to wrap, prepare and cook the cakes with the teacher of the Culinary Arts Department of Saigontourist School - Ms. Pham Thi Dong - who won the gold medal in the Banh Chung Wrapping and Cooking Contest - to guide them on the "tricks" to make the perfect Banh Chung. The highlight of this year's contest is the "innovation" from the combination of American pork ribs with Vietnamese green beans and American soybeans. The fusion of Vietnamese and American cuisine creates Banh Chung that is truly Vietnamese but no less attractive than the American pork ribs and American soybeans, bringing a different, rare level to the traditional Vietnamese cake.
The finished banh chung cakes from the contest along with some other gifts will be given as gifts to celebrate the Year of the Dragon to disadvantaged families through the introduction of the Cu Chi District Youth Union in the program "Spring of Love 2024".
"Traditional cake wrapping contest" is a meaningful and affectionate activity that Saigontourist School has brought to students over the years to educate and encourage them to become citizens with a heart and a vision to contribute to society. This "heart" is not only associated with the profession and work that they will be attached to, but also with the spirit of volunteerism and humanity for the community.
