Miss Kieu Duy and two runners-up Phuong Thanh and Cam Ly excitedly joined students in wrapping banh tet in the traditional banh wrapping contest.
On January 8, the top 3 Miss Vietnam National Contest, along with hundreds of students from Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality and guests, and units under Saigontourist Group participated in wrapping banh tet at the "7th Traditional Banh Tet Wrapping Contest".
Participating in the 7th Traditional Cake Festival with the theme "Spring Connection - Tet Sharing", Miss Kieu Duy (middle) said that this was the first time she had wrapped banh tet with students. "Today, when I wrapped banh tet with my friends, I felt a very happy and very Tet atmosphere. I felt more clearly that Tet was approaching", Miss Vietnam 2024 shared.
On this occasion, Miss Kieu Duy also sent her best wishes for the New Year: "The year 2025 is approaching, Kieu Duy wishes everyone good health, joy and success in life, and a happy and warm New Year."
The competition gathered 36 teams, including 20 student teams from Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality, majoring in: culinary arts, baking, hotel management, restaurant management, tour guiding... along with 16 guest teams and hotel units under Saigontourist Group.
The special feature of this year's contest: The ingredient used to wrap banh tet is American pork ribs.
“Normally, I would use pork belly, but the school’s banh tet is being modified to use American pork ribs. The pork ribs are deboned to make the filling and combined with other ingredients to wrap the cake,” said Master Bui Thi Kim Loan, Head of the Organizing Committee.
Each team will wrap 12 banh tet in 75 minutes, each weighing 800 grams. After wrapping, the cakes will be cooked that same evening at school.
Scoring criteria include: Cake wrapping, time, appearance, cake weight, food safety and hygiene, competition area hygiene, impressive costumes, decoration and presentation of the tray of offerings.
The competition also had the participation of many foreign teams, contributing to affirming good international relations and cultural exchanges between countries. Phimmasone Phitsamay, a Laotian student, studying first year of hotel management and business, shared that the first time he participated in wrapping banh tet in the traditional cake festival with Vietnamese students was a memorable experience. After experiencing wrapping banh tet, Phimmasone Phitsamay said that wrapping banh tet is not difficult but not easy either, it requires a lot of skill and meticulousness.
Master Bui Thi Kim Loan said that every year near Tet, the school organizes this competition. "This program is more humane because when the cakes are finished, they will be given to poor families so that they can have a warmer Tet holiday," Master Loan shared, adding that the school also called on benefactors, in addition to banh tet, there are other gifts to give to poor families.
The festival was organized by Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality in collaboration with the Saigon Tourist Corporation Labor Union, the Indiana Soybean Alliance (INS), and the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
