Along with 32 other poor and near-poor households in the commune, Mr. Ho A Xa's family in Ra Man village, Xy commune was selected to implement the goat farming model. This is one of the models of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction of Huong Hoa district. Accordingly, in early 2022, Mr. Xa's family was supported with 4 breeding goats to implement the model.

Having been thoroughly instructed on how to care for and prevent diseases for the goats, Mr. Xa feels very optimistic about the economic efficiency of this model. Goats are livestock that reproduce quite quickly, care is quite simple and the source of food for this type of livestock is easy to find locally. Since being supported with breeds and guidance on raising techniques, Mr. Xa has focused on taking the best care of the goats with the hope of soon escaping poverty and becoming well-off.

Every day, Mr. Xa takes the time to cut leaves, collect vegetables, and use discarded banana stems and banana bunches as food for the goats. Along with that, he also builds solid, high, and spacious barns to help the goats live in a clean and airy environment and limit diseases. Up to now, after nearly 2 years of raising, Mr. Xa's family's goats have reproduced and multiplied to 20. The goat raising model has helped Mr. Xa's family earn an income of 15-20 million VND per year.

Mr. Xa shared: “From a very difficult life with unstable income, thanks to the government's support for the goat farming model, my family now has a stable source of income. Thanks to that, my family has the conditions to improve our lives, and my children can fully study. In the future, I will continue to take good care of the goats to increase my income and escape poverty sustainably.”

Similar to Mr. Xa's family, Mr. Ho Van Than's family in Ra Po village, Xy commune has also been a poor household for many years. To create conditions for Mr. Than's family to rise up, the local government has considered and supported his family with 3 native pigs from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction. Thanks to his diligence and willingness to learn about animal husbandry and disease prevention, Mr. Than's native pig farming model has developed well.

From the initial number of piglets supported, Mr. Than's family has now grown to 7 mother pigs and given birth to 23 piglets. The pigs with good breeds will be kept by the family to multiply the herd, the remaining pigs will be sold by Mr. Than's family to generate income to cover their living expenses.

“Thanks to the state-supported piglets and the hard work of implementing the local pig farming model, my family now has an annual income of over 30 million VND. From a poor household, my family has risen to a near-poor household and is determined to escape poverty in the near future and strive to have a decent life,” Mr. Than shared.

Over the past years, with support from various channels, the Xy commune government has focused on effectively implementing programs and projects to help people develop production. At the same time, the commune has coordinated to open vocational training classes, cultivation techniques, animal husbandry, and veterinary medicine. In particular, the commune has increased investment in improving livestock and poultry, developing in the direction of raising farms and hills suitable to the production level and economic development of ethnic minorities in the area, ensuring that hunger eradication and poverty reduction achieve sustainable results.

Thanks to that, the poverty rate of the commune in the period of 2022-2023 decreased by an average of more than 5%/year, exceeding the set target. In addition to livestock models supported by the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, Xy commune also implemented a model of growing precious medicinal plants, a model of forest protection contracts; promoting business start-ups, startups...

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xy Commune, Ho Van Ben, said: "Currently, poor and near-poor households in Xy Commune mainly choose to implement the model of raising local pigs, goats, crossbred Sind cows... because these models are suitable for people's conditions, easy to raise, low capital and good output, and generate income quickly. Not only Mr. Xa and Mr. Than's households, but many other poor and near-poor households have also earned income from livestock models. In the coming time, the commune will continue to propagate and mobilize people to implement models with higher efficiency, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction and more and more families will escape poverty and become well-off."

In order to effectively implement the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction for the 2021-2025 period, in recent times, Huong Hoa district has focused on implementing many solutions, focusing on supporting production development in the agricultural sector for people, especially ethnic minorities who are poor and near-poor; correctly identifying the subjects in need of support and selecting crops and livestock based on local needs and realities.

The implementation of these projects is expected to be an effective "fishing rod" to help poor and near-poor households in Huong Hoa district escape poverty soon and gradually improve their quality of life.
