The winner of the Thanh Da Peninsula planning ideas competition could receive a prize of up to one million USD, according to the leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Planning and Architecture.
The information was given by Director of the Department of Planning and Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Thanh Nha at the conference to summarize 2023 and plan for this year of the industry, on the morning of January 9.
Ho Chi Minh City is organizing an international competition to find planning and architectural ideas for the Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula, Binh Thanh district, from November 2023 to March this year. The research scope is the entire peninsula with a total area of nearly 427 hectares, along with some areas opposite the Saigon River, especially Truong Tho Urban Area, Thu Duc City and Binh Thanh District.
The general requirement set by the city is that the peninsula will become a sustainable, modern ecological urban area, contributing to promoting economic and social development.

According to Mr. Nha, this is an international competition, if the prize is low, it will be difficult to invite large, prestigious units in the world to participate in the research. Therefore, the prize for this competition is expected to be up to million USD, to attract units with high expertise in the field of architectural consulting and planning, helping to achieve the best results.
"The city is assigning the Department of Finance to advise on funding for the award through socialization due to limited budget," said Mr. Nha.
The international competition for planning and architectural ideas for the Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula will go through two rounds. Five units with sufficient capacity and conditions to pass the preliminary round will enter the final round. The competition council will have some domestic members providing information and documents. The professional part will invite international guests from the US, UK, Japan to participate such as: Sasaki, Nikken Sekkei... It is expected that Ho Chi Minh City will announce the results of the competition in early March this year.

Units participating in the competition must ensure criteria on operational and professional capacity and meet conditions such as: professional activities in the field of planning and architecture; practical experience, understanding of Vietnam; having participated in designing planning projects in the world with similar scale and nature...
About 6.5 km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula is surrounded by the Saigon River and Thanh Da canal. The only road access to this place is currently Kinh Thanh Da bridge, on the Binh Quoi - Xo Viet Nghe Tinh road.
The Binh Quoi - Thanh Da new urban area was approved by Ho Chi Minh City and called for investment since 1992. However, the project has not been implemented yet due to its large scale, high total investment capital (over 30,000 billion VND), and complicated site clearance. The project has been suspended for more than 30 years, affecting the lives of thousands of households in the planning area.
