Australia limits international student numbers to ensure fairness among educational institutions and increase the quality of international students
International Student Enrollment Cap 2025
Under the federal government's proposed reforms to the industry, the number would be capped at 270,000, with individual limits for each facility.
Of these, about 145,000 are for public universities, about 95,000 for vocational training institutions and 30,000 for other educational institutions.
This is about 7,000 lower than pre-pandemic levels and about 53,000 lower than last year. The 270,000 international students in 2025 will also be evenly distributed across the education system in each of Australia's regions.
This means that large universities such as the Group of 8 will see a reduction in the number of international students enrolled, while schools in Regional areas will see a significant increase.
Abolish the mechanism of prioritizing student visa consideration based on risk level
Under Ministerial Direction 107, signed by former Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil in December 2023, in 2024 Australia will process student visa applications based on the risk level of education providers. Low-risk schools will be prioritized for faster visa processing.
However, this directive has caused a "bottleneck" in the system of reviewing study abroad applications. Therefore, representatives of educational institutions in Australia have proposed replacing this preferential mechanism with a policy of limiting the number of international students in 2025 as recently announced.
Eliminate the application of additional years for some priority industries
In addition to changes to entry requirements, Australia has also announced policies that affect the ability of international students to settle and find work after graduation.
Specifically, international students in Australia are limited to 24 hours instead of unlimited. In addition, students in many fields are only allowed to stay and work for 2-4 years after graduation, down two years from before.
What are the opportunities for studying in Australia?
Although the latest study abroad policies have many changes that have made many international students feel confused, these changes only limit high-risk groups of students who study abroad for purposes other than those declared on their visas, aiming to improve the quality of the education system in Australia.
So for serious students, with a well-prepared resume and profile, they can still study abroad successfully as usual.
Mr. Simon Tran - Deputy General Director of Avenue to Success Study Abroad Consulting Company, said that previously the visa processing time was about 3-6 weeks but now the average is 2-4 months.
He suggested that international students should prepare carefully to achieve the highest possible IELTS score and GPA. In addition, they need to prepare clear financial records, answer the GS test fully and explain each question reasonably to increase the success rate of their application.
Prepare your application carefully to optimize your study abroad application approval rate.
