(NLDO) – Not simply an experiential activity, the banh chung wrapping workshop is also an opportunity for students from Vietnam and Myanmar to connect more closely.
On January 13, Bach Viet Polytechnic College (Go Vap District) organized a workshop on making banh chung, attracting a large number of students. Notably, the workshop also had the participation of 26 Myanmar students studying Japanese economic and commercial interpretation at the school.

While wrapping cakes, Mr. Thanh shared with students about Tet customs in Vietnam.
Taking on the role of instructor, Dr. Tran Manh Thanh, Principal of Bach Viet Polytechnic College, made many students admire his dexterity and friendliness.
While wrapping the cake, Dr. Thanh said: "A qualified banh chung is a square-shaped, firm-to-the-touch cake. After boiling, the cake does not become soggy, retains the softness of the sticky rice, and the deliciousness of the meat and green beans. Although today there are ready-made molds for wrapping the cake, not everyone can wrap it successfully."
According to Dr. Thanh, the Chung cake wrapping workshop is an extremely meaningful activity, creating an opportunity for Myanmar students to learn more about the traditional Tet customs of Vietnam. Chung cake is not only a traditional dish during Tet but also a profound cultural symbol, symbolizing reunion, prosperity and gratitude to ancestors.
Lecturers and students join hands to wrap banh chung
Although many cakes were broken and we had to buy more dong leaves to fix them, everyone was excited because we had a very meaningful workshop.
The first time wrapping banh chung, many students burst out laughing because the finished product was so different from the instructions. "Although the banh chung I wrapped is not very beautiful, I am still very proud. I hope the banh chung will be ready soon so I can enjoy the taste of Vietnamese banh chung" - Hnin Eu Shwe Yee excitedly said.
The 2024 school year is the first year the school welcomes international students to study, so the school wants to bring a cozy Tet atmosphere with traditional dishes for international friends to enjoy. In addition, wrapping banh chung together helps Vietnamese and Myanmar students overcome language and cultural barriers, creating meaningful connections based on common experiences.
The school plans to wrap about 100 banh chung. Once cooked, the cakes will be distributed to Vietnamese and Myanmar students living in the dormitory.
