The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback's movements against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), closed the week at 103.68 points.

Nymex crude oil futures were firm and trading around $67.25 a barrel. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note is currently at 4.299%.

World gold prices increased at the beginning of the US trading session due to increased demand for safe havens. The market is worried about the global trade war causing a world economic recession and the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) loose monetary policy.

The world gold price is trading at a new record high and is in the range of 3,000 USD/ounce. The market is holding its breath waiting for the gold price to break this mark. According to analysts, if the gold price breaks above 3,000 USD/ounce, the rally is not over yet.

Gold remains an important safe-haven asset. The bank's analysts forecast global economic growth to slow to 0.3% in the third quarter of this year.

Along with its safe-haven appeal, gold is being boosted by the worsening outlook for the growing US government debt, according to a report by a team of commodity analysts at Macquarie, led by Marcus Garvey.

The government is once again facing the possibility of a shutdown as Congress fails to pass a new funding bill. Looking ahead, analysts say they do not expect the U.S. government to make significant cuts in spending.

“Amid a challenging financial environment, gold prices are likely to remain at historically high levels,” the report said.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has been pressuring the Fed to cut interest rates, with the Fed recently shifting to a more neutral stance, saying it is in no rush to cut rates because the labor market remains relatively healthy and inflation risks persist.

Additionally, investment demand for gold-backed exchange-traded funds is down 20% from its 2020 all-time high, so the market still has plenty of room to run higher.

In the latest twist in US President Donald Trump’s multilateral trade war, the European Union has retaliated against US tariffs on steel and aluminum by imposing a 50% tariff on US whiskey exports. In response, Mr Trump has threatened to impose a 200% tariff on wine and spirits imported from Europe.

Gold Price Forecast

Although gold is trading at new record highs, Ryan McIntyre, managing partner at Sprott Inc., told Kitco News that gold is overvalued.

When you look at what’s going on in the world and consider the potential, gold remains a worthwhile investment. Gold prices have risen more than 13% this year, while the broader stock market index has fallen nearly 6%.

Markets are flocking to gold as a hedge against speculation that trade tensions could get worse before easing, said Yeap Jun Rong, market strategist at IG.

Mr. Rong predicts that gold prices could reach $3,000/ounce in the second quarter of 2025, when reciprocal tariffs could cause another wave of market turmoil.

There is little downside risk to gold this year, according to commodity analysts at Macquarie, who forecast gold prices to rise to a peak of $3,500 an ounce in the third quarter of 2025.
