According to the 2024-2025 school year plan announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, the 2025 high school graduation exam is expected to take place on June 26-27.

High school graduation exam 3 weeks early: Preparation will be rushed, review time will also be reduced?

Recently, the Department of Education and Training of four localities including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nghe An, and Ninh Binh proposed that the Ministry of Education and Training adjust the time to organize the 2025 high school graduation exam earlier in the context that the whole country is implementing the arrangement and merger of provinces and cities and completing district-level tasks.

Regarding the arrangement of provincial-level administrative units, on March 18, Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra said that it is expected to complete the entire arrangement of commune-level administrative units before June 30, and complete the merger of provincial-level administrative units before August 30. After being announced, this information has made many people wonder whether it is necessary to change the schedule of the 2025 high school graduation exam, instead of the old schedule scheduled for June 26-27.

Sharing with VietNamNet, Ms. Minh Ngoc, a parent whose child is taking the high school graduation exam this year, said: "The Ministry of Education and Training just needs to ensure that the rights of students taking the exam this year remain unchanged, there is no need to organize the exam early. I think students are mainly worried about the priority bonus points according to the affected areas."

Mr. Long Thanh (a parent in Nghe An) shared: “Personally, I think that if the exam is held a few weeks earlier, the preparation will be rushed, reducing the review time will be disadvantageous and may affect the students' results. The Central Government has just informed that the merger of provinces will be completed before August 30, so the children will still be able to take the exam at the end of June, so I think the exam schedule should be kept the same.”

Many other parents also think that everything should continue as normal; provincial and municipal leaders should not be too worried, causing unnecessary disruption.

Keeping the high school graduation exam schedule the same, students will be more stable mentally

In the difficult mountainous area of Thanh Hoa province, Mr. Nguyen Nam Son, Principal of Muong Lat High School (Muong Lat district) said that teachers and students of the school hope to keep the high school graduation exam schedule as originally planned by the Ministry of Education and Training.

According to him, all teaching and review plans for students have been built based on the expected exam schedule issued by the Ministry of Education and Training at the beginning of the year. If the exam schedule is pushed up earlier, it will affect not only the psychology of students but also the teachers teaching grade 12.

"We are also worried that the quality will not be guaranteed. Students in our area have poor academic performance. Sometimes the same content has to be taught over and over again, not to mention that this class is the first to take the exam under the new general education program," said Mr. Son.

According to Mr. Son, in remote mountainous areas, procedures and documents are often carried out more slowly than in urban areas. “If the exam schedule is pushed forward, it means that the preparation time is shortened, which will greatly affect the procedures, documents, and review instructions for students. In our mountainous areas, students often do not complete their own documents and have to ask teachers for guidance. Up here, going to school requires encouragement; when students cannot register themselves, they often skip the exam. Teachers guide or do it for each student, so it takes more time,” said Mr. Son.

Ms. TN, principal of a high school in Hai Phong City, agrees: “If the exam schedule is kept as planned by the Ministry of Education and Training, students will be more stable in their thinking, because they will have planned strategies and review processes for each stage. If the exam schedule is pushed up, even though the whole country is like that, there will definitely be disruption. In the past, many students have focused on exams to assess thinking and ability and are now returning to review for graduation exams.”

The principal said that most students and teachers at the school wanted to organize the exam according to the original plan.

Not to mention, according to Ms. N, this year the Ministry of Education and Training has decided to eliminate early admission and convert all admission methods to the same measurement. Therefore, the results of this year's high school graduation exam are very important to students.

“In the context of early admission being canceled, registering for the aptitude test is difficult, and candidates do not know their chances of being admitted to university, so the results of the high school graduation exam become very important. Not to mention, this is also the first exam under the new general education program. It is difficult for students and teachers to review because everything is new, and there are no available sets of questions to practice. Therefore, students still want more time to review,” said the principal.

Regarding this issue, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training) said that this is a very big issue and must be researched and considered before a decision is made.

“The high school graduation exam is always prepared early and remotely. As we know, this is a national exam and takes place simultaneously in all 63 provinces and cities. Because the exam takes place simultaneously, it is impossible for each locality to have a different exam schedule. Therefore, if the exam schedule is changed, it must be changed simultaneously, not just in a few localities,” said Mr. Ha.

According to Mr. Ha, the preparation for the high school graduation exam is decentralized to each province. "Therefore, if there is a change, this must be carefully calculated," Mr. Ha emphasized, adding that in case of a change, it must be done in the spirit and principle of having the least impact on the entire system, including the candidates.

“If the exam takes place at one time and some other work takes place at other times, the work will be very prolonged and may affect the enrollment work later,” said Mr. Ha.
