Commenting on the difference between London coffee prices and domestic prices, Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep, Vice President of VICOFA, said that these two markets operate relatively independently. He said: “When coffee prices are high, international roasters only buy when absolutely necessary. Even when domestic prices are lower than international floor prices, they are not in a hurry to import goods.”
Mr. Hiep also emphasized that in the past, the export price of coffee was often based on the London floor price after deducting transportation costs (called "backward price"), but this is no longer common. He said: "There was a time when the actual coffee price was traded at a higher level than the price on the London floor, due to the urgent needs of the buyer."

Comments on pepper market
According to Korf Food Products BV (Netherlands), pepper prices in Vietnam continue to remain high despite the harvest season. Thanks to stable finances, farmers are now able to better stockpile goods, thereby being more proactive in selling to the market.
The current price of VND160,000/kg gives pepper growers no reason to sell at a lower price. This year's harvest is forecast to be only about 180,000 tons, and inventory levels are also lower than in previous years.
Market supply and demand situation
Regarding import demand, the market has not recorded significant fluctuations. In 2024, the US imported nearly 100,000 tons of pepper from Vietnam, and currently has a large reserve, so there is no rush to buy more.
China is also in a state of low trade, but is forecast to increase purchases this year to meet domestic demand. Notably, the pepper harvest on Hainan Island, which began in June, may be affected by the impact of Typhoon Yagi in September 2024, leading to a decrease in output.
High pepper prices and rising financial costs have forced importers to purchase only sparingly. According to a report from Olam Food Ingredients (ofi), Vietnam is entering the peak harvest period with about 30% of the output harvested, but the pressure to sell to the market is still not great.
Farmers continue to hold on to their stocks because they have just had a successful coffee crop and expect pepper prices to increase even more. Meanwhile, the new pepper crop in Cambodia has begun trading but the volume of products brought to the market is not much, while Brazil and Indonesia are still in the off-season.
