Currently, raw dry coconuts are purchased by businesses in Ben Tre province at a price of around 190,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits). This is a record price so far.
According to coconut growers in Ben Tre, a price of over 50,000 VND/dozen is profitable. Despite the high price, most coconut gardens in the locality are in a state of “hanging”, because the dry season coconut yield is very low. In particular, many coconut gardens have been attacked by black-headed caterpillars in recent times, causing them to be exhausted. At this time, the whole province still has more than 271 hectares of coconut gardens infected with black-headed caterpillars.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ben Tre, the total coconut area of the province is nearly 80,000 hectares, accounting for about 42% of the country's coconut area and about 88% of the Mekong Delta's coconut area, yielding about 700 million fruits. The entire province has an area of coconut produced according to organic standards of more than 20,000 hectares (accounting for about 25% of the province's coconut area), of which the certified area is 13,000 hectares according to the standards of the US, Japan, EU, China, Korea, and Taiwan.
Ben Tre province has about 180 enterprises and nearly 2,400 establishments producing and processing a variety of coconut products. Ben Tre coconut products are now available in the markets of more than 90 countries and territories around the world.
