Before his death, Samsung CEO Han Jong-hee was in charge of Samsung's mobile devices and consumer electronics division, while Samsung co-CEO Jun Young-hyun oversaw the chip business of South Korea's largest company.
Han Jong-hee died in hospital on Tuesday (March 24) while being treated for cardiac arrest, a Samsung spokesman said, adding that his successor had not yet been decided.
Han Jong-hee’s departure comes as Samsung has suffered weak earnings and a falling share price in recent quarters after falling behind rivals in advanced memory chips and contract chipmaking, which have seen strong demand from artificial intelligence (AI) projects. Samsung has also ceded its smartphone market dominance to Apple.
Longtime leader at Samsung
Han Jong-hee, who joined Samsung Electronics nearly 40 years ago, built his career in the TV business. He became Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics in 2022. He is also a member of the company's board of directors.
Last week, Han Jong-hee presided over a Samsung shareholder meeting where he and other executives were grilled by shareholders after the company failed to capitalize on the AI boom that made it one of the worst-performing tech stocks last year. In semiconductors, Samsung also lags behind SK Hynix in HBM chips, which Nvidia and others use for AI graphics processors.
At the meeting, Han Jong-hee apologized for Samsung's recent poor stock performance and the company's failure to respond adequately to the rapidly growing AI semiconductor market. He is expected to attend Samsung's new home appliance product launch event next Wednesday.
