Germany's public service sector is facing a serious shortage of human resources, especially in citizen registration offices, tax authorities, immigration offices, schools, police agencies... It is estimated that about 360,000 jobs in public service sectors are vacant.
In addition, around 1.3 million other positions are expected to be vacant between now and 2030, due to retirement. Primary and secondary education is one of the sectors most affected by the shortage of human resources in Germany.
The shortage of skilled workers is one of the major challenges facing the German economy. To turn the situation around, the German parliament has passed a new immigration law aimed at attracting high-quality human resources to the business and public service sectors. The coalition government in Germany wants to attract 400,000 highly skilled foreign workers each year to rebalance the aging population and address labor shortages in key economic sectors.
Statistics Canada says Canada is short tens of thousands of workers in the construction sector. Since January 2023, the Canadian construction industry has lost 71,000 workers. In addition to construction, public administration, information, culture, entertainment, transportation, and warehousing sectors are also facing serious staff shortages. Experts say the upcoming wave of retirements will make the situation worse.
Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marc Miller said the country’s housing crisis will not be solved without the help of skilled immigrants. According to Miller, the Canadian government is working to cool down housing prices and attract workers in the construction sector to meet housing needs. Canada aims to welcome more than 450,000 new immigrants by 2024 and 500,000 by 2025.
