Making community tourism a key product of Lai Chau

Up to now, Lai Chau has 12 provincial-level community tourism spots and 01 typical ASEAN community tourism spot (Sin Suoi Ho village, Sin Suoi Ho commune, Phong Tho district).

Lai Chau has majestic natural landscapes, 20 ethnic groups living with unique indigenous cultures and friendly, hospitable people. This is an opportunity for the locality to develop community tourism.

Identifying these strengths, the province has recently had many solutions to develop community tourism. Up to now, Lai Chau has 12 provincial-level community tourism sites and 1 typical ASEAN community tourism site (Sin Suoi Ho village, Sin Suoi Ho commune, Phong Tho district).

In addition, the locality also owns a system of villages with the potential to become community tourism destinations, concentrated in the districts of Tam Duong, Phong Tho, Than Uyen and gradually expanding to Sin Ho and Nam Nhun districts.

Based on Decision No. 3222/QD-BVHTTDL dated October 30, 2024 of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on "approving the Project on Developing Community Tourism in Vietnam," the province has issued a plan to implement the Project on Developing Community Tourism in Vietnam in the locality by 2030 with the goal of making community tourism a complete and key product in the local product system while still ensuring its distinctiveness, creating a highlight to attract visitors on the "Northwest Arc" route. Thereby, gradually positioning the Lai Chau community tourism brand on the Vietnam tourism map.

According to Mr. Tong Thanh Hai, Permanent Vice Chairman of Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee, the province has a unified perception and viewpoint of linking community tourism development with new rural construction, improving people's lives; promoting the movement of building rural economy, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction.

Along with that, the locality develops community tourism products and services associated with preserving and promoting the fine traditional values ​​of local ethnic groups and developing cultural industries.

At the same time, improve the quality of community tourism services, develop tourism in a sustainable direction; preserve and diversify local occupations for the community, improve livelihoods for people, especially in areas with a large number of ethnic minorities.

The province sets a target that by 2025, over 92% of recognized community tourism sites will have community houses; 100% of community tourism sites will have regular and effective mass art troupes; 70% of community tourism service providers will be trained in tourism management.

Lai Chau strives for 80% of community tourism workers to be trained (of which at least 50% are female workers); each community tourism site to have at least 1 employee who knows a foreign language; recognize 3 more districts to meet new rural standards and 1 community tourism chain model.

The locality strives to have 10% of traditional craft villages; 100% of recognized community tourism sites will be introduced and promoted; over 70% of community tourism sites will use information technology applications in tourism activities; over 30% of provincial community tourism sites will be digitized.

Lai Chau builds Sin Suoi Ho village into a model of community tourism to introduce and replicate in the province, region and the whole country. At the same time, strive to have 2 ASEAN community tourism models by 2030; community tourism spots welcome and serve over 30% of total visitors to the province.

In 2024, Lai Chau tourism industry made a significant "leap" by welcoming and serving 1,359,000 visitors (of which international visitors are estimated at 30,500), an increase of 30% over the same period in 2023 and exceeding the set target by 20.5%; estimated revenue reached over VND 1,084 billion. In 2025, Lai Chau continues to set a target of welcoming over 1.4 million visitors, with total tourism revenue reaching over VND 1,136 billion.

Mr. Tran Quang Khang, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lai Chau province, said that to achieve the above goal, the industry continues to focus on communication and promotion of Lai Chau destinations with many new contents and forms; at the same time, it focuses on building unique and attractive tourism products based on local strengths and potentials. From there, attracting many international tourists to Lai Chau not only in 2025 but also in the coming period.

The issuance of the plan for community tourism development in Lai Chau province until 2030 is of great significance, contributing to the preservation of traditional culture, creating new community tourism products, diversifying service types, and increasing the experience value for tourists when coming to Lai Chau. Thereby, increasing income and improving the lives of people, especially ethnic minorities./.
