Speaking to Thanh Nien on August 10, Mr. Son Dang said that the paper horse was shipped yesterday and is expected to arrive in France 10 days later. Because the customer did not return directly to Mexico but to France during the period, the paper horse is quite small in size, making it convenient for the customer to carry on the next trip.
The gold horse that Mr. Son Dang bought for a Mexican guest
"When I read the news that Arnaud Zein El Din, also an architect, had to leave a paper horse at Noi Bai airport, I had the idea of buying him another horse. When I saw the very special souvenirs he bought in Vietnam to bring back to Mexico, I thought this character must be very interesting and very respectful of Vietnamese culture. Rarely do tourists coming to Vietnam collect household items and utensils such as conical hats, water pipes, sedge mats, masks, fishing rods, stone mortars and pestles, beer mugs... like that. Especially the paper horse. Surely this visitor has learned a lot about Vietnamese culture, so he collected unique things, but having to leave the gift at the airport is a pity," said Mr. Son Dang.
So, through friends, he contacted Arnaud Zein El Din to offer another paper horse and the customer was very happy. "I simply thought of doing this to share the joy, so I called on my friends to join in," he said. The budget he gave was 4 million, of which the transportation cost took up the majority, and the paper horse cost about 100,000 VND.
He also said that the art of folding paper to make votive horses in Vietnam has similarities with Mexico. Coming to the Oaxaca region of Mexico, it is easy to see colorful mascots that are designed by people and hung on balconies or placed in front of houses and squares during festivals. The mascots are created from imagination, so each one is different and extremely lively. This is a very interesting handicraft specialty of Mexico, called Pinata.
Therefore, he found it completely understandable that the Mexican architect guest tried to bring back a paper horse with the same purpose as the Mexican Pinata: a bridge between the earthly world and the underworld.
The horse the guest left at the airport
"Tourist Arnaud Zein El Din buying Vietnamese daily necessities also suggests to us about gift products for foreign tourists. Should we have a program to develop such gift products? Maybe everyday items are too familiar to us and have no value, but for foreign tourists, it is different," Mr. Son Dang explained.
After 3 weeks of traveling in Vietnam, in early August, tourist Arnaud Zein El Din went to Noi Bai airport to return home. On social networks, a video of him carrying a suitcase in one hand and a paper horse in the other went viral inside the airport. However, the horse was later abandoned. According to Emirates airline, the airline that transported the passenger, because the passenger had more carry-on luggage than the allowed number of pieces, they had to rearrange it, and finally Arnaud Zein El Din decided to abandon the horse.
