On December 12, Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee announced the "Project for Conservation and Development of Red-crowned Cranes in Tram Chim National Park for the period 2022 - 2032" .
The red-crowned crane, with its proud appearance, up to 1.8m in height and distinctive red head color – is considered a symbol of peace, luck, and sustainable development. This is the tallest flying bird, currently classified as a vulnerable species.
Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Pham Thien Nghia shared that Dong Thap has long been a familiar habitat for red-crowned cranes, a rare bird species in the world. Every year, thousands of cranes migrate to Tram Chim to live.
Tram Chim National Park in Tam Nong district, recognized as the 4th Ramsar site of Vietnam; this is the remaining wetland ecosystem of the ancient Dong Thap Muoi, with very high biodiversity.
Due to the impact of climate change, changes in hydrological regime and many other causes, the Tram Chim ecosystem has changed, many species of animals and plants have degraded, including the community of mangroves (the favorite food of red-crowned cranes) has gradually narrowed, the composition of aquatic species has also decreased in quantity, affecting the food source and habitat of rare birds.
According to the People's Committee of Dong Thap province, the crane conservation project, expected to be implemented in 10 years, will have about 100 cranes raised and released, and 50 individuals capable of living in the natural environment.
Specifically, in the period of 2022 - 2028, Dong Thap received 30 cranes (6 months old) from Thailand to raise, care for and release into the natural environment.
In the period 2029 - 2032, the province continues to negotiate with Thailand to receive 30 more cranes (from 6 months old), expected to breed about 40 cranes from the original parent flock.
The Provincial People's Committee assessed that the red-crowned crane project will help people and friends from near and far, when coming to Dong Thap, to observe and learn about the living environment and growth characteristics of red-crowned cranes, so that everyone will love this bird species even more.
