The Philippine Football Federation wants to turn their friendly tournament into a regular event, with the same impact as Thailand's King's Cup. This is a way to make football the top favorite sport in the Philippines.
In its first edition, which will be held in September this year, the tournament will be called the GoTyme Bank Cup 2025 (after the sponsor). The first edition is expected to be a competition between the Philippines and strong opponents. According to the Manila Bulletin, the PFF has sent invitations to the teams of South Africa, Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore. At this time, Vietnam, Indonesia... do not have a schedule of matches so the teams can completely participate.
“There is an undeniable love for football in this country. And it continues to grow. We want to be part of the story that brings Philippine football to the global stage,” said a representative of the tournament sponsor.
“We share the goal of taking football further by inviting top teams. This common vision makes GoTyme Bank the right partner to help us build the future of Philippine football.”
According to the format, GoTyme Bank Cup will take place every 3 years. The 2025 version will have a total of 4 participating teams. The teams will be divided into pairs to play in the semi-finals. The winners of the 2 semi-finals will meet in the final and the losers will play for third place. This is the same format as Thailand's King's Cup.
With the invitation from the Philippines, the Vietnam national team has a chance to compete in September. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team could face opponents from Indonesia, South Africa, etc.
