ANTD.VN - Responding to the National Action Program on Sustainable Production and Consumption for the 2021-2030 period, FrieslandCampina, a corporation with a legacy of over 150 years owning the brands Dutch Lady Milk, Friso, Yomost..., is proud to be one of the pioneering foreign enterprises implementing a green production model, minimizing emissions, aiming for green growth and contributing to the community in Vietnam.
To do that, FrieslandCampina Vietnam has soon developed long-term strategies and realized this goal by focusing on using green energy, saving and reusing water; circulating packaging and minimizing plastic waste in the supply chain.
Optimizing green manufacturing processes at the factory
FrieslandCampina Vietnam is one of the pioneers in the world dairy industry to develop a carbon footprint monitor system, use renewable energy, initiate and implement new initiatives to optimize and reduce energy consumption.

Specifically, the company's factories have replaced 100% of diesel with steam from biomass energy to reduce tens of thousands of tons of CO2 emissions each year. As a result, from 2015 to 2023, Binh Duong and Ha Nam factories have reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 98%, making the most of solar energy, optimizing energy consumption, and using steam systems from biomass.
Notably, in the Dairy Development Program, the company has supported and worked with farmers to reduce CO₂ through improving livestock productivity, installing biogas systems on farms and separating cow manure, and using solar energy at fresh milk cooling points, helping to reduce more than 7,000 tons of CO₂ per year.

Make a positive impact on water resources
An indispensable element in the journey to create a green future is Reducing – Reusing – Recycling (3R) water resources because this is a very important part of the company's sustainable development program at the factories. The two factories in Binh Duong and Ha Nam are both invested in modern technology, automatic management systems, closed wastewater treatment, energy saving and use of clean energy sources, meeting strict Dutch standards.
By optimizing the cleaning-in-place (CIP) process and applying innovations in production operations, FrieslandCampina Vietnam’s factories are saving approximately 73,500m3 of water and reusing nearly 15,400m3 of water annually, equivalent to the amount of water used by 6,909 households in one month. These activities contribute to realizing the goal of reducing 25% of water consumption per ton of finished products during the period 2018-2030.
In parallel, to conserve water resources, factories have been implementing projects to reuse up to 50% of industrial wastewater, equivalent to 250,000m³/year. By 2027, this amount of recycled water will be used for cleaning and cooling purposes in the factory.

Implementing sustainable packaging initiatives
FrieslandCampina Group has made sustainable packaging one of the six pillars of its Sustainable Development Strategy. To pursue this pillar, since 2019, FrieslandCampina Vietnam and 8 other companies have co-founded the Vietnam Recycled Packaging Alliance (PRO Vietnam) with the mission of enhancing the recycling collection capacity of alliance members, promoting the circular economy for a green - clean - beautiful Vietnam.
Currently, 91% of FrieslandCampina Vietnam's packaging is recyclable, especially the environmentally friendly brown paper packaging made of bio-PE material (Bio-PE) derived from sugarcane bagasse of the Dutch Lady milk brand, which will be launched in mid-2022. With brown packaging, the Dutch Lady milk brand can reduce 10.4% of CO2 emissions compared to conventional packaging. It is estimated that in the next 10 years, it will help reduce 517 tons of greenhouse gases and 392 tons of fossil plastic.
At its manufacturing plants, FrieslandCampina is gradually eliminating single-use plastic stretch film for pallets and replacing it with materials that can be reused for up to 5 years, reducing about 48 tons of plastic per year. Since 2019, the plants have implemented and maintained the commitment of “No waste to landfill”, ensuring that all waste is collected and treated in an environmentally friendly way. Accordingly, 100% of the milk cartons discharged from the plants are recycled to create useful products such as paper, roofing sheets, pallets, etc.

In addition to its commitment to collect and recycle packaging through PRO Vietnam, in 2023, FrieslandCampina Vietnam initiated a three-way strategic cooperation with Dong Tien Binh Duong Paper Company Limited and Truong Thinh Construction Mechanical Company Limited to enhance the capacity to collect and recycle waste packaging.
On the journey of nearly 3 decades in Vietnam, the steadfastness in commitment and action has helped FrieslandCampina Vietnam reap many "sweet fruits" with awards and recognition from state agencies and organizations on sustainable development. For example, the 2021 National Quality Gold Award from the Prime Minister, the "Products and Responsible Consumption Leadership" and "Responsible Marketing" awards at the "Top 50 Sustainable Development Enterprises" ceremony presented by Nhip Cau Dau Tu Magazine, "Top 100 Sustainable Enterprises - CSI 2024" organized by the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) with the core being the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development in coordination with the Central Economic Committee, the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.
