(HNMO) - On June 4, the first official competition day of the 12th ASEAN Para Games, the Vietnamese delegation excellently won 15 gold medals in swimming, weightlifting and athletics.
Athlete Vo Huynh Anh Khoa (disability class S8) brought home the first gold medal for the Vietnamese disabled sports delegation at the 12th ASEAN Para Games, in the 400m freestyle swimming event with a time of 5 minutes 20 seconds 94. At the 11th ASEAN Para Games, Vo Huynh Anh Khoa was also the athlete who won the first gold medal for the Vietnamese delegation, also in the 400m freestyle event.
Also in swimming, Vi Thi Hang (disabled class S7) excellently won two gold medals in the women's 400m and 100m freestyle. Notably, in the women's 400m freestyle, Vi Thi Hang excellently set a new Southeast Asian record with a time of 6 minutes 57 seconds 95, breaking the old record of 9 minutes 34 seconds 94.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Thanh Trung (disability class S4), Vo Thanh Tung (disability class S5) each brought home a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke, Nguyen Van Hanh won a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke in the SB11 disability class.
The Vietnamese team also won a gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay thanks to Quach Van Vinh, Nguyen Hoang Nha, Nguyen Ngoc Thiet and Vo Huynh Anh Khoa. Thus, on the first day of competition, swimming brought home 7 gold medals for the Vietnamese disabled sports team.
In weightlifting, Vietnamese weightlifters won 6 gold medals. In the men's under-49kg category, athlete Le Van Cong won the gold medal, successfully lifting 3 weights of 162kg, 166kg and 168kg to achieve the highest result. In addition to the gold medal for the highest weight (168kg), Le Van Cong also won a gold medal in the total lift.
In the men's under-54kg category, weightlifter Nguyen Binh An successfully lifted 141kg, 143kg and 145kg. In addition to the gold medal for the highest weight of 145kg, Binh An also won the total gold medal with a lift of 429kg. Also in this category, weightlifter Huynh Ngoc Phung won 2 silver medals.
In the women's under-50kg category, Dang Thi Linh Phuong also brought home two gold medals in the highest weightlifting and total lift. She successfully lifted three weights of 91kg, 93kg and 95kg. In her fourth lift, the Vietnamese female athlete broke the Games record when she successfully lifted 102kg.
Athletics also contributed 2 gold medals, by female athlete Nguyen Thi Hai (disability class F57) in the shot put event and Tran Van Nguyen in the javelin throw event, disability class F40-41.
As of 9pm on June 4, the Vietnamese Paralympic Sports Delegation had 15 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 13 bronze medals, temporarily ranking second on the medal tally. Leading the way was the Indonesian Sports Delegation with 23 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 12 bronze medals.
