Quang Tri students bring creative products to the US to compete

Still overwhelmed with joy and surprise after their project won first prize in the National Science and Technology Research Competition for Middle and High School Students in 2024-2025, Le Minh Hieu (class 12A2) and Cao Trung Quan (class 12A1, both from Quang Tri High School, Quang Tri Province) are packing their luggage and completing procedures to depart for the US. The wheelchair product to support people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in moving and communicating is one of nine Vietnamese projects participating in the 2025 International Science and Technology Fair (ISEF) in New York in May.

Previously, by chance, Hieu and Quan came across information about ALS patients on social networks. They learned about the disease and came up with the idea of ​​creating a tool to support people with the disease. "From a normal wheelchair, we installed a system to help patients move and communicate through the eye pupil and other operations using a controller. From the time we came up with the idea to completing the product, it took us about 9 months," Cao Trung Quan shared.

Teacher Le Cong Long accompanied Quan and Hieu from the idea to the completion of the product.

Quan and Hieu's product will be one of 9 Vietnamese projects participating in the ISEF competition held in the US this coming May.

Mr. Le Cong Long, a physics teacher at Quang Tri High School, has accompanied many generations of students, especially those with a passion for scientific creativity. "Hieu and Quan have once again helped Quang Tri High School have the opportunity to exchange with international schools. In addition to creating a creative product, both of them have also continued the school's tradition of always having generations of excellent students, winning prizes in many major competitions," Mr. Long shared.

Ms. Le Thi Huong, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province, said that with the achievements in major competitions, the province's education sector is highly appreciated by the Ministry of Education and Training and is expected to continue to produce generations of excellent students.

"The Department has been coordinating with the Provincial People's Committee to connect with the Ministry of Education and Training to create the most favorable conditions for Hieu and Quan to bring their products to the US to participate in the ISEF competition. Previously, students from the province have participated in the competition twice and won third prize once. These are achievements that demonstrate that the province's education sector is achieving high efficiency, contributing to the overall development of the national education system," said Ms. Huong.
