Vietnamese paintings continue to sell for millions of dollars

Recently, Christie's auction house announced a series of successful auctions of Vietnamese paintings. Leading the way was the painting Three Ladies by Nguyen Gia Tri (painted in 1934), which was sold for up to 2.07 million USD (52.7 billion VND). In addition, according to Mr. Ace Le - CEO of Sotheby's Vietnam, the Sotheby's auction on the evening of March 29 recorded the work "Playing Live Music" by Mai Trung Thu, painted in 1945 with ink and pigment on silk, successfully hammered at a price of 1.3 million USD (33.3 billion VND). Mr. Ace Le said: "With this result, "Playing Live Music" holds the 12th position in the list of Vietnamese paintings hammered at the highest price, out of a total of 26 works exceeding the million USD mark. In this list, Mai Trung Thu has 4 works (only after Le Pho - 10 works), with 3 of them hammered at Sotheby's".

The work Live Music by Mai Trung Thu is priced at 32 billion VND.

Live Music (81.7 cm x 63.9 cm) is one of Mai Trung Thu's largest silk paintings. The painting depicts two graceful young women playing the pipa by a lotus pond. The evening (March 29) and day (March 30) sessions of Sotheby's had a total of 116 lots for sale, of which 109 were sold, achieving a 94% clearance rate. This rate is a sharp increase compared to Sotheby's average clearance rate in 2024, which was only 85%. Of the 116 lots, 12 were Indochinese paintings, with a clearance rate of 92% (11/12 paintings were sold).

Some other notable works in the Sotheby's auction include Joy of Life I by Mai Trung Thu, priced at 910,000 USD (22.7 billion VND); Hydrangea - Vu Cao Dam priced at 182,000 USD (4.5 billion VND); Flowers - Le Pho priced at 195,000 USD (4.8 billion VND)...

"The successful sale of works by famous Vietnamese artists this time not only demonstrates their always-recognized talent but also proves the growing interest in Vietnamese art in the international market," said Ace Le.
