Vietnam's trade scale is growing rapidly, with peak year exports exceeding 371 billion USD, and it is expected that by 2024, export turnover will far exceed this figure. However, along with increased exports, our country's goods are subject to many trade defense cases from importing countries.

In recent times, Vietnam has paid special attention to strengthening economic cooperation with countries in Asia, Africa and Oceania to boost exports.

In ASEAN, there are 4 countries that use the most trade defense measures against Vietnam, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand .

At the same time, Vietnam has taken advantage of cooperation opportunities from bilateral FTAs with individual partners such as Vietnam - Japan, Vietnam - Korea, as well as multilateral FTAs through regional organizations such as ASEAN or the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

In the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam's export value reached 265.44 billion USD, up 15.9% over the same period, of which 30 items achieved export turnover of over 1 billion USD, accounting for 92.3% of total export turnover (of which 6 items had export turnover of over 10 billion USD, accounting for 62.6%).

To date, Vietnamese goods have been sued in nearly 260 trade defense cases. In 2023 alone, 15 new cases initiated by foreign countries against our country's export goods have arisen, in addition to many cases under investigation, or subject to annual or final review.

By the end of 2023, the United States had investigated 59 defense cases against Vietnam's exports, accounting for nearly 25% of the total number of foreign investigations into our country's exports.

"Vietnam has joined the regional supply chain, so it is often investigated jointly with other countries. Not to mention, some countries tend to abuse trade defense to protect domestic production. In addition, Vietnam has joined the regional supply chain, so it is often investigated jointly with other countries," the Department of Trade Defense (Ministry of Industry and Trade) explained.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, 14/24 countries in the Asian, African and Oceanian market groups have investigated 138/256 different trade defense cases against Vietnamese export goods. The countries with the most investigations are India, Turkey, Australia, Indonesia, Philippines... In Oceania, Australia has also investigated 18 cases against Vietnamese goods.

In ASEAN alone, the four countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand have investigated 48 trade defense cases against Vietnamese goods. As of June 2023, Malaysia has investigated 10 cases, Indonesia has investigated 14 cases, the Philippines has investigated 14 cases...

Over the past 8 months, exports to ASEAN have recovered well and achieved high double-digit growth, reaching 24.5 billion USD, up 11.9% over the same period last year. With rapid export growth, it is inevitable that Vietnamese goods will be "scrutinized" more and face defense cases.
