Although there are many similarities, each movie still has its own characteristics and messages.
“Many people associate Wish We Could Fly with the Korean drama Reply 1988. Actually, that’s true. The family in the film all have an older sister, a younger daughter (Nhi and Duksun) and a younger son. Actually, in Vietnam, there are many similar situations. The younger daughter is often forgotten. Meanwhile, the eldest daughter carries expectations and love. The youngest daughter is pampered because she is the youngest in the family,” said screenwriter Ngan Vi.
Besides the journey of growing up of young people in the slum, Wish We Could Fly Together also criticizes the bias of parents towards their children. Not only conveying the message of family love, the film also sheds light on the complicated emotions and hurt of the second child.
Mr. Hop (Ha Phong) - Mrs. Nga (Kieu Trinh) family has three children: Ngan (Miss Thuy Dung), Nhi (Trinh Thao) and Hoan (Vo Dien Gia Huy). Mr. Hop often compares Nhi with her sister in terms of academic performance, adultery and personality: "I never thought you could pass the flight attendant exam", "Star weight", "I don't know if she is my child". While Mrs. Nga "prefers men over women", Hoan is always given priority, considered "golden child". The unequal love of parents increasingly makes Nhi disadvantaged.
