On February 22, speaking with Thanh Nien reporter, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Manh, Chairman of Giao Thien Commune People's Committee, Giao Thuy District (Nam Dinh) said that a drowning accident had just occurred in the area, killing 2 people (1 parent, 1 student). The incident occurred at Xuan Thuy National Park (in Giao Thien Commune).

Specifically, at around 12:30 p.m. on May 20, a group of about 50 people, including parents and 6th grade students from a private school (located in Tay Mo, Hanoi) visited and experienced Xuan Thuy National Park.

The group was organized by the parents of the class and led by Mr. VK, a parent. The boat took the group to the sandbank between the Red River and the Tra River so that the students could experience catching clams and mussels.

"When the children went down to the beach, the water was shallow, but while they were experiencing it, the water rose quickly. This is a young sandbank, so when the water rose, the flow changed, the sand quickly collapsed and was swept away by the water. The students and their parents also collapsed along with the sandbank. Seeing that, the boat owner threw life jackets down so that the parents could save the students. After saving the two children, Mr. VK continued to swim out to save the male student named L. (who was not accompanied by his parents) but could not save them, both were swept away by the water," said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Manh.

When the rescue was completed, the parents counted the people and discovered that Mr. VK and L. were missing, so they quickly reported to the National Park Management Board. After that, the authorities, along with the Nam Dinh provincial border guards and local fishermen, organized a search for the victims.

"At around 3:00 a.m. on May 21, L.'s body was found near the accident site. At around 1:30 p.m. the same day, VK's body surfaced about 2 km from the accident site," Mr. Nguyen Xuan Manh informed.

Giao Thuy District Police then completed the procedures to hand over the bodies of the two victims to their families.

According to Mr. Manh, at the place where the students and parents experienced, there has never been a similar incident, but a few kilometers away, many people have died due to being swept away by water. "The water in this area rises and falls continuously, the water rises and falls several times a day, so it is very difficult to control," said Mr. Manh.

Xuan Thuy National Park is located at Ba Lat estuary, where the Red River flows into the sea, with Giao Thuy District (Nam Dinh) on one side and Tien Hai District (Thai Binh) on the other. The park has a core area of about 7,000 hectares, a buffer zone of about 14,000 hectares, and is an estuarine wetland ecosystem. Since 1989, the park has participated in the Ramsar Convention and since 2004, it has been recognized by UNESCO as the core area of the Red River Delta Biosphere Reserve.

The garden is characterized by vast mangrove trees, vast lagoons and many aquatic species. The garden is also known as a "bird station" because every year migratory birds on their journey to avoid the cold often come here to "recover their strength" and prepare for the next journey. For a long time, the garden has not only been a destination for researchers but also a place for sightseeing and experience for many tourists, associations, groups...
