According to Mr. Tran Xuan Duong, Director of the Management Board of Species and Habitat Conservation Area, Head of the Forest Protection Department of Mu Cang Chai District, the conservation area has a total area of 20,108.2 hectares, located on the administrative boundaries of 5 communes: Che Tao, Pung Luong, Nam Khat, De Xu Phinh and Lao Chai.
Currently, the forest flora in the reserve has a total of 764 species of vascular plants belonging to 462 genera, 149 families and 5 phyla; the vegetation is mainly evergreen broadleaf trees. The terrestrial vertebrate fauna is 221 species, 162 genera, 61 families; including 53 species of mammals, 130 species of birds, 26 species of reptiles, and 12 species of amphibians.
Authorities regularly patrol to protect forests in Mu Cang Chai Species and Habitat Conservation Area.
In particular, over 4,000 Northeast ironwood trees and ancient po mu trees in the Ta Cay Dang area, in Na Hang village, Che Tao commune, located in the conservation area, have just been recognized as Vietnam Heritage Trees. Of these, over 1,000 ironwood trees are between 400 and 800 years old, with diameters ranging from 2.5 m to 5.8 m or larger; over 3,000 po mu trees grow naturally, most of them over 100 years old, some with diameters over 2 m, over 1,000 trees with diameters ranging from 1 to 1.8 m, and heights ranging from 15 to 20 m.
“Mu Cang Chai Species and Habitat Conservation Area is a place with great potential for ecotourism with its wild beauty, unique indigenous culture and winding roads leading to Mong villages, increasingly attracting tourists to the locality,” said Mr. Duong.
In the reserve, there are also over 17,000 hectares of special-use forests in the communes of Che Tao, Lao Chai, and Nam Khat bordering Lai Chau and Son La provinces. This is a strictly protected area, where the black gibbon lives, so coordination with relevant sectors of neighboring provinces such as Lao Cai, Lai Chau, and Ha Giang is always a top priority to protect the special-use forests and precious gibbons.
A “heritage tree” in the reserve
However, Mr. Duong shared: “The area of the conservation area has been included in the planning of 3 types of forests since 2006 and the Provincial People's Committee has allocated land for management, protection and regeneration of special-use forests. However, since its establishment, measurement, marking and mapping have not been carried out, so the requirements for sustainable forest management have not been met.”
In addition, the infrastructure investment for forest management and protection in the reserve is still lacking; it has not attracted and called for support and investment for socio-economic development projects in the buffer zone. The lives of local people in the reserve are still poor, mainly relying on the forest to exploit and hunt wild animals, so every year there are still some violations of the Forestry Law.
Mr. Sung A Dinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Che Tao Commune, said that the commune has established groups and teams to protect forests and prevent and fight forest fires; every year, 100% of households sign a commitment to protect forests and prevent and fight forest fires, and not to exploit or hunt wild animals.
To mobilize the cooperation, the Management Board of Mu Cang Chai Species and Habitat Conservation Area has for many years effectively implemented the policy of paying for forest environmental services to support the lives of people participating in forest protection in the conservation area; promptly raided and handled violators of the Forestry Law..., contributing to preserving, protecting and developing the most biologically diverse flora and forest vegetation in the Northwest region.
