Tourists visit and explore the beauty of terraced fields in La Pan Tan commune.
Mu Cang Chai has a favorable geographical location, bordering many neighboring districts and provinces, especially with National Highway 32 with a length of nearly 100 km running through, convenient for travel, cultural exchange and forming tours through the district's and province's landmarks such as Muong Lo area, Nghia Lo town connecting with Lai Chau, Son La, Dien Bien, Lao Cai provinces and other Northwestern provinces.
Along with that, Mu Cang Chai has a high forest coverage rate, reaching over 60% with the pristine values of the primary forest and many rare animals and plants listed in the Red Book, there is a conservation area for ornamental species with the center being Che Tao commune and the northern and eastern outskirts of De Xu Phinh, Pung Luong, Nam Khat communes; there are 700 hectares of terraced fields, of which more than 47% are concentrated in the three communes of La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, and De Xu Phinh.
Along with the Mu Cang Chai Terraced Fields National Scenic Area, the district also has many potential destinations for eco-tourism such as Mo Waterfall tourist area, Mu Cang Chai town, Nam Khat hot spring, mountain climbing areas in Pung Luong and Nam Khat communes, ancient stone beach in Lao Chai commune, paragliding adventure tourism site at Khau Pha pass...
In the district, there are 181 tangible and intangible cultural heritages that have been inventoried; including 1 special national relic of terraced fields; 1 national relic of the place where Khau Pha Guerrilla Team was established and 3 national intangible cultural heritages. The Mong people have a rich folk culture, traditional rituals imbued with national identity have created a unique cultural feature of the region.
In order to promote tourism development, the district has developed a tourism development project for the period 2021 - 2025 to build Mu Cang Chai district into a tourist district by 2025, with a vision to 2030; Action program on tourism development "Green - identity - safety - friendliness" for the period 2021 - 2025; Planning project to build 5 sub-regions for tourism development in Mu Cang Chai district...
In particular, the district focuses on leading and directing the development of community tourism in the area. Accordingly, the district focuses on promoting and advertising tourism on digital technology platforms to help tourists easily access and choose the right time to participate in experiencing Mu Cang Chai tourism activities, creating an effective connection between supply and demand. The district has over 1,250 commercial and service businesses, including 139 motels and homestays with a capacity of over 3,000 guests/night.
At the same time, the district promotes regional linkages with urban areas, tourist areas and spots in the Northwest region. Every year, the District Party Committee has directed the organization of special festivals such as: Festival to explore the scenic landscapes of terraced fields, "Celebrating new rice", "Hoa to day", Mong Khen Festival; drawing patterns with beeswax on fabric, performing Mong ethnic costumes, Mong Khen... contributing to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Mong ethnic group in association with promoting and introducing the image of the land and people of Mu Cang Chai to domestic and foreign tourists.
Ms. Luong Thi Xuyen - Vice Chairman of Mu Cang Chai District People's Committee shared: "To achieve the target of revenue from tourism activities in 2025 reaching over 400 billion VND, the district continues to synchronously implement the policies of the Central and the province on supporting tourism development; exploiting and developing quality, unique, attractive, branded tourism products associated with protecting the natural environment; focusing on investing in infrastructure, tourism services, and tourist attractions to ensure that these services are suitable for local culture and environment; encouraging and supporting people to develop tourism products such as handicrafts, costumes, traditional musical instruments, local cuisine, cultural experience tours, focusing on the quality and uniqueness of the products, creating attraction for tourists".
In 2024, Mu Cang Chai district welcomed 384,872 tourists, equal to 110% of the district's target and 117% of the province's target; of which 31,518 were foreign visitors. Revenue from tourism reached 388.3 billion VND, equal to 111% of the district's target and 133.9% of the province's target. Mu Cang Chai has become an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists with many meaningful activities, highly influential, creating deep impressions. This result is gradually helping the locality effectively implement the goal of sustainable poverty reduction, improving people's lives, striving to basically no longer be a poor district by 2030.
