People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh is one of the rare Vietnamese directors who have achieved international success. He was born on May 11, 1938 in Hue, in a large intellectual family. His father was Professor Dang Van Ngu - a talented doctor of Vietnamese medicine, and his mother was Mrs. Ton Nu Thi Cung - a beautiful, gentle, dignified woman who was good at French. People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh's mother was the daughter of a Minister of Justice under the Khai Dinh Dynasty.

People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh studied in Vietnam until he was 14 years old, then went to the former Soviet Union to study for 18 months. Returning to Vietnam, he worked at the Film Distribution Center as a film interpreter. Dang Nhat Minh can speak many languages, including French.

Director Dang Nhat Minh's creative career spans more than half a century with works that truly reflect the lives of Vietnamese people through many historical ups and downs. He leaves a strong impression on audiences with films rich in humanity and poetry.

Starting with little-known works such as Sea Stars (1973), Last Rainy Day of the Year (1976), his name really shined with the film The Town Within Reach . This work was successful in realistically portraying the pain and loss of people after the Northern border war.

In 1983, when the heroic and epic inspirations were still strong in literature and art, with works tending to reflect one-sided praise, "biographicalism" was valued and the individual was overlooked, The Town Within Reach was truly a new voice, a different voice, expressing the many inner turmoils. The film brought him the prestigious Golden Lotus Award at the Vietnam Film Festival in 1983.

“I want to repay the land that raised me and helped me grow up. At the end of my life, I wrote the short story Jasmine, telling simple stories about the area where I lived. I conveyed my love for Hanoi and the common people of Hanoi.

I made this film without any pressure to make money because the investors told me to just make the film I wanted to make. There is nothing happier than making a film you really want to make. This is difficult, not easy.

When making the film, I only think about my feelings for Hanoi. At the end of my life, what else do I want? Hundreds of billions in revenue are useless, doing what I want is the most enjoyable!”, director Dang Nhat Minh once shared.

All the films of People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh are successful in building and depicting human fates in the flow of history in a truly unique and impressive way. He exploits deep inner thoughts, with many monologues. His characters are deeply concerned about the meaning of life and humanity.

With his outstanding contributions to the film industry, he was awarded the title of People's Artist in 1993 and received the First Class Labor Medal in 1998. In 2007, director Dang Nhat Minh received the Ho Chi Minh Prize for his works: Thi Thanh Trong Tay, Bao Gio Cho Den Thang Muoi, Ha Noi Mua Dong 1946 and Mua Guava. Director Dang Nhat Minh once held the position of General Secretary of the Vietnam Cinema Association.

In 2010, People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh was the first Vietnamese director to be honored by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contributions to the country's cinema. Here, director and People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh had a talk show in front of American audiences about his films. The film Guava Season was selected for screening.

An American journalist wrote an article in the International Herald Tribune calling Dang Nhat Minh " The shuttle diplomat of Vietnamese cinema" , because through his works, international friends understand more about the country and people of Vietnam with its historical beauty and cultural depth.

The Korean news outlet Korea Herald asserts that director Dang Nhat Minh is a name that has long been known to the world cinema. His films are both realistic and evocative, and are considered the poems of Vietnamese cinema.
