There have been tense confrontations between the special forces of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (GUR) and Russian Wagner mercenaries in Africa.
A report interviewing GUR soldiers was produced by French TV channel TF1 and immediately attracted great public attention after it was officially broadcast. According to Defense Express.
In the video, one of the GUR commandos briefly described some of the operations his unit has been involved in against local rebel formations, and in particular mercenaries from the Russian private military company (PMC) Wagner. According to Defense Express.
First, Ukrainian military officials noted that Sudan is a country with strong logistics in the region and has developed port infrastructure on the Red Sea, which is therefore actively used by Russian mercenaries. According to Defense Express.
The number of Russian mercenaries present in Sudan is very large, they are cooperating with local armed groups to exploit resources as well as profit from a number of other economic activities, "competing" directly with the government. According to Defense Express.
The main mission of the GUR soldiers is described as relatively simple, including only reconnaissance, collecting information on the activities of Wagner mercenaries, the use of traffic routes and data on troop numbers. According to Defense Express.
But the second phase is much more complicated and dangerous, which is to sabotage the deployment of mercenaries and paramilitary formations on the mission of supplying ammunition and fuel. According to Defense Express.
There are only a few roads in good condition in Sudan, which is beneficial for GUR and makes it easier for them to plan and understand the routes of convoys, according to Defense Express.
For the demarcation line across the Nile, Ukrainian intelligence special forces must cross by rubber boat and prepare explosive devices to destroy enemy transport vehicles if necessary, according to Defense Express.
Notably, because the unit has a limited number of personnel, they have begun training new recruits who will later participate in special operations, but GUR has not revealed whether these are local people or not. According to Defense Express.
GUR soldiers said that the Sudanese government highly appreciated the quality of training of Ukrainian special forces, as they not only excellently completed their tasks, but also trained local troops. According to Defense Express.
Western media commented that there are about 3,000 Wagner mercenaries present in Sudan, helping support the activities of local rebel forces against the current government. According to Defense Express.
In addition, Russian mercenaries are accused of being closely involved in supplying weapons to Janjaweed rebels through their base on the border with the Republic of Chad. Russia has not responded to these allegations. According to Defense Express.
Although the number of Ukrainian intelligence special forces is relatively small, they have proven to be highly effective in operating in this African land, according to Defense Express.
But the upcoming situation is expected to be much more complicated, as Russia has established the "African Corps" - the successor structure of Wagner PMC and is urgently recruiting troops to send to the hot spot. According to Defense Express.
