Once famous as one of the most polluted craft villages in Bac Ninh province, the lives of people in Man Xa, Van Mon, and Yen Phong have now changed a lot.

The most illegal and polluted craft village in the province

Around mid-2024, Man Xa craft village is still famous for hundreds of households working in aluminum casting.

The situation of industrial solid waste and wastewater from production facilities being discharged directly into the environment is a painful one.

Previously, Man Xa aluminum casting village seriously polluted the environment.

Ash and industrial waste piles higher than people's heads flood both sides of the road, encroaching on people's productive land.

Along with that, hundreds of chimneys billowed black, giving off a pungent smell. At times, the smoke and dust were so thick that they formed a hazy layer, covering Van Mon commune.

The leader of Van Mon Commune People's Committee said that at that time, there were about 250 households producing aluminum in Man Xa village.

In addition, there are about 100 production facilities in the Man Xa craft village industrial cluster invested by Hanaka Group Joint Stock Company, headquartered in Tu Son City.

According to a representative of the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Ninh province, the environmental pollution situation here is very alarming.

The amount of waste (aluminum slag, coal slag) generated from the metal casting process and household waste is not thoroughly collected, and is dumped along roads and in low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, the local drainage system is seriously degraded and no longer has drainage capacity.

Results of surface water monitoring at the pond receiving wastewater from Man Xa craft village over the years show that organic and heavy metal analysis indicators are 1.5-16 times higher than the allowable standards.

Get involved

Speaking to the press, Colonel Pham Van Luong, Deputy Director of Bac Ninh Provincial Police, Head of the interdisciplinary inspection team for environmental pollution treatment in Bac Ninh province, affirmed that the inspection team was divided into 4 groups, conducting peak inspections for 1 month, without days off, and resolutely handling the environmental pollution situation in Van Mon before December 31, 2024.

Nowadays, the village roads and alleys in Van Mon are clean, people can go out and breathe fresh air.

The working process of the interdisciplinary inspection team showed that representatives of the investor and the facilities all had high cooperation.

The investor of the industrial park pledged to soon overcome the existing problems and operate the industrial park in accordance with the goal of relocating small-scale production and business households to concentrated production areas.

Along with the strict inspection of the provincial interdisciplinary inspection team, Yen Phong district also made efforts to join in, establishing an inspection team to go to every alley and knock on every door.

At the same time, propagate, explain, and persuade establishments, households, and individuals to voluntarily demolish incinerators and chimneys, develop plans to change occupations, or relocate production to industrial clusters.

Bac Ninh Provincial Police also established 6 inter-sectoral checkpoints to control vehicles entering and leaving the area 24/7, ensuring that raw materials do not continue to flow into the craft village.

Mr. Man Van Truyen, Secretary of the Party Committee of Van Mon commune, said that up to now, the government and functional forces have destroyed 382 aluminum smelting furnaces and 327 smoke columns at 207 households in residential areas.

100% of the establishments in the craft villages and industrial clusters have stopped operating. There is also no longer the situation of secret waste discharge as before.

Continue to thoroughly handle pollution

Coming to Van Mon in the first days of 2025, the reporter noted that the new life was different. People almost did not need to wear masks, the village roads and alleys were also greener and cleaner.

Police force discovered and handled a case of illegal dumping of waste in Van Mon.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Linh, Phu Xa village, Van Mon commune shared: "My house is near Man Xa village, so for the past 30 years, I have had to endure the dust and smoke that covers me day and night.

Family members must always wear masks, except when eating and drinking. For about a month now, the aluminum casting business has stopped operating, and the fresh air has returned, making the whole commune very happy."

Secretary of the Van Mon Commune Party Committee Man Van Truyen affirmed: "Although we have achieved initial results, we are still not negligent or subjective.

Currently, the locality still maintains 6 24/7 inspection checkpoints in Man Xa village, ensuring that illegal aluminum casting activities cannot resume.

The locality also propagates and mobilizes households to proactively change their occupations. Some households have also established projects to move their production facilities to the right planning location, ensuring current regulations.

Yen Phong District People's Committee has also completed site clearance, prepared to invest and construct a 3.8-hectare hazardous waste treatment site next to the craft village industrial cluster to collect and treat hazardous waste in the area.

A survey by authorities shows that by 2022, Man Xa craft village will have more than 300,000 tons of aluminum slag dumped haphazardly.

In this locality, there are up to 7 large dumping sites scattered in Man Xa village with a total area of 76,000m2.

In addition, there are many small dumps scattered around the craft village. Meanwhile, on average, each day, the amount of solid waste generated from the craft village's activities is from 35-40 tons of coal slag and aluminum slag.
