Formula for converting admission scores between methods

The Ministry of Education and Training and many universities plan to convert admission scores between methods to the same common scale.

In the draft admission guidelines, from 2025, universities will still be allowed to use many admission methods, but must consider them together with graduation exam scores, and convert scores between methods and combinations to a common scale.

The Ministry of Education and Training requires universities to implement simple and convenient conversions, and to use high school graduation exam scores or high school learning results as the basis for developing conversion rules.

The schools then analyze statistical data on the number of candidates admitted by each method (at least two consecutive years), and the academic results of each student.

From the correlation between university learning outcomes and the score distribution of the same group of candidates; the threshold to ensure input quality (floor score) to the maximum level of the score scale, schools must determine at least 3 score ranges (for example, excellent - good, fair, pass), from which to build at least three linear correlation functions (3 first-order functions) for these score ranges.

Equivalent point conversion formula of the Ministry of Education and Training:

This method of determining the score area and constructing the linear correlation function is equivalent to dividing the score range and determining the coefficient values a, b of each score range according to the conversion formula of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

In the simulation table of how to determine the score range, the Ministry of Education and Training also divides 4 score ranges with the two ends of the score considering the thinking assessment results and considering the high school graduation exam results:

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien, Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, also said that the school's equivalent score conversion formula was established on the basis of converting scores from the thinking assessment and talent selection exams to the high school graduation exam results.

The expected scale is 30. The expected conversion formula is as follows: y = ax + b

In which, y is the converted score of the talent selection and thinking assessment method; x is the score of the high school graduation exam results; a, b are the conversion coefficients.

However, the two coefficients a and b do not have only one single value but will have many different values corresponding to different point ranges.

To better understand how to calculate the values of the two coefficients a and b, candidates can refer to the IELTS score conversion table that schools often use. For example, Hanoi University of Science and Technology converts IELTS 5.0 to 8.5 points, IELTS 5.5 is 9 points; IELTS 6.0 is 9.5 points; IELTS 6.5 is 10 points. Each different IELTS score level will be determined to correspond to a different score value.

Similarly, for each different range of thinking assessment scores and high school graduation scores, coefficients a and b also change accordingly.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology plans to divide the score into 4 ranges, with the high school graduation score from 20 and above. The coefficient values a and b are determined for each of these ranges. From there, candidates can look up the coefficient table to calculate their score.

Mr. Dien added that the school will determine the values of coefficients a and b after the distribution of scores for this year's high school graduation exam, that is, after the Ministry of Education and Training announces the exam results.

The 2025 high school graduation exam score distribution, the thinking assessment test score distribution and learning outcomes of students admitted by each method from 2022 onwards (GPA score) are three important bases for the school to determine the value table of the two coefficients a and b.

According to Mr. Dien, other universities can apply the equivalent score conversion formula of Hanoi University of Science and Technology by dividing the score range and determining the coefficient values a, b according to their own criteria suitable for the school.

The coefficient values a, b and the number of score ranges are announced by schools in the form of a table for candidates to easily look up.

However, Associate Professor Dien also noted that schools need to determine conversion coefficients in the direction of "most fairness for candidates", avoiding prioritizing high conversion coefficients for other methods, which reduces the chances of admission for candidates using the method of considering high school graduation exam results.
