(CLO) CNN is going through a major transformation. They will cut about 200 traditional television jobs, and will hire an equivalent number to serve the digital transformation goal.
"The decisions we've made are part of CNN's ongoing effort to adapt to the rapidly changing way American audiences consume news," CNN President Mark Thompson said.

“This is a moment where the digital story feels like an existential question. If we don’t follow audiences to new platforms with real trust and scale, our future prospects are not good,” Thompson stressed.
Since Thompson took over CNN more than a year ago, he has emphasized CNN's need to become more of a digital product.
The company also announced plans to create a digital product that will allow customers to stream the channel across multiple online platforms, after launching a $3.99-a-month digital subscription in October 2024. CNN will also unveil a digital lifestyle product this year, although few details were provided.
“ Our goal is simple: to shift CNN’s focus to the platforms and products that our audiences are turning to, and in doing so, ensure CNN’s future as one of the world’s greatest news organizations,” Thompson wrote in a memo to staff. “America and the world need high-quality, fair, and trustworthy news sources now more than ever. This difficult and sometimes painful process of change is the only way to ensure we can continue to provide that news.”
Thompson said CNN hopes to generate $1 billion in digital revenue by 2030.
