Causes of sinusitis

Sinusitis is divided into two groups: chronic and acute.

Chronic sinusitis . There are many causes of chronic sinusitis such as: Viruses, bacteria, fungi.

Based on the duration of illness, it can be divided into:

Acute sinusitis - usually has symptoms such as nasal congestion, fever, runny nose, pain around the eyes... occurring within 1-4 weeks. If this condition lasts longer than 4-12 weeks, it can be called subacute sinusitis.

Chronic sinusitis - symptoms usually last more than 12 weeks. There are 3 main groups of chronic sinusitis: allergic rhinitis caused by fungi, chronic rhinopharyngitis without polyps and chronic rhinopharyngitis with polyps.

Recurrent sinusitis - often occurs in cases of asthma or allergies, causing the disease to recur many times a year.

Is sinusitis contagious?

Sinusitis is not a contagious disease. Therefore, the disease cannot be transmitted from sick person to healthy person.

Sinusitis prevention

To reduce the risk of disease, people can take some of the following measures.

- Improve your health by eating nutritious foods and increasing physical exercise.

- Some cases of acute sinusitis can occur while working in dusty environments. At this time, to prevent the disease, people need to increase nasal hygiene by washing their nose.

- Limit exposure to irritants such as: dust, smoke, mold, dog and cat hair, pollen, etc. Clean the work environment and living space regularly to keep the space airy.

- Limit bad habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. At the same time, stay away from places with cigarette smoke and air pollution to limit the risk of irritation and respiratory infections.

- In winter, you need to keep your body warm. In summer, you can use a humidifier when using air conditioning.

- If you have respiratory diseases such as asthma, allergies, allergic rhinitis... you need to follow your doctor's treatment.

- Wear a mask when going out.

- Vaccination with influenza and pneumococcal vaccines.

How to treat sinusitis

Treatment of sinusitis is divided into acute and chronic groups.

In acute sinusitis , treatment is divided into 3 types: acute viral sinusitis, post-viral sinusitis and acute bacterial sinusitis.

Treatment of acute viral and post-viral sinusitis: will mainly use methods to treat symptoms such as reducing fever, relieving nasal congestion, washing the nose, improving physical condition...

Acute bacterial sinusitis will be treated with antibiotics. However, the type of antibiotic used will depend on each individual. The treatment regimen will be about 7-10 days. In addition, patients can apply some other measures such as: nasal spray, nasal wash...

In the treatment of chronic sinusitis , the treatment regimen must be based on the cause of the disease. Usually, patients will be treated with a combination of both medical and surgical treatments when indicated.

It is recommended that patients with sinusitis in general can supplement foods rich in vitamin C and zinc.
