Not only the impact of the A/H5N1 bird flu epidemic, but also the eating habits of American people have contributed to the high price of eggs in this country.

In recent months, egg prices in the US have skyrocketed due to the impact of the A/H5N1 bird flu epidemic, forcing chicken farms to destroy millions of chickens to prevent the spread of the flu.
However, besides the impact of bird flu, experts also found that the increase in egg prices is partly due to the egg-eating habits of Americans, as eggs appear in many dishes of the people of this country.
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the amount of eggs consumed by Americans increased by 17% between 2012 and 2021. In fact, American consumers consume more eggs than red meats such as beef or lamb.
The Washington Post reported in 2019 that each American consumes about 29 eggs per year.
Mr. Tim Burke, a restaurant owner in the US, said eggs make up 70% of the menu at his restaurant.
“We have fried eggs, omelets, eggs in pancakes or baked goods like waffles, French toast. Eggs are also in hamburgers, so a lot of people eat eggs for lunch. Hard-boiled eggs are also in salads,” Burke explained.
Experts say more and more families in the US are using eggs as a source of protein to replace meat, fish and beans.
“Each of us consumes as many eggs as a hen lays in a year,” a Los Angeles Times reporter told CBS News.
Additionally, in an October 2023 report, the USDA said that egg consumption was increasing as consumers chose to eat eggs instead of other protein-rich foods because eggs were cheaper, amid widespread food inflation in the US at that time.
Not only that, in 2016, the US government and experts removed eggs, shrimp, and lobster from the list of foods containing high cholesterol.
However, because it is affordable and easier to prepare than shrimp, eggs suddenly became a star from then on.
Eggs are cheap and healthy
A study by Harvard University shows that a large egg contains 6 grams of protein along with many other nutrients such as vitamins A, B, D, minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, potassium, antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which are good for the eyes and choline which is good for the brain and nervous system of humans, especially pregnant women.
Despite being packed with nutrients, each egg only has 70 calories, making it a great choice for many people, especially bodybuilders.
On the other hand, because egg yolks contain cholesterol, if we consume too many eggs over a long period of time, it can increase the risk of heart-related diseases.
