Enhancing the journalistic ecosystem with new features.

On August 17th, the Vietnam Journalists Association, in collaboration with the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, organized a workshop on the application of technology in managing digital newsrooms.

The workshop was chaired by the following individuals: Le Quoc Minh, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, and President of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Hoai Bac, Director of the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang, Head of the Professional Affairs Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association; and Dr. Ta Bich Loan, Head of the Entertainment Programs Production Department (VTV3), Vietnam Television.

The workshop served as a forum for experts, journalists, and leaders of media organizations to identify technological trends and the inevitable trends shaping digital newsroom models worldwide , and specifically for media organizations in Vietnam. Delegates discussed technological solutions for managing digital newsrooms; the practical application of technology in digital newsroom management in Vietnam, and more.

The workshop consisted of two sessions. Session 1 was themed "Technological Solutions in Digital Newsroom Management," with presentations focusing on clarifying the role of digital newsrooms in the context of Vietnam's current digital transformation in journalism; the application of Blockchain technology in digital newsroom management; the application of AI technology in automated news and video production based on keywords; and the application of AI in digital content management.

The "Digital Transformation Strategy for Journalism by 2025, with a Vision to 2030," approved by the Prime Minister, aims to build media organizations that are professional, humane, and modern; to effectively fulfill their mission of disseminating information and propaganda to serve the revolutionary cause of the Party and the country's reform process; to ensure their leading role in guiding public opinion and maintaining information sovereignty in cyberspace; to innovate and enhance the reader experience; to create new revenue streams; and to promote the development of the digital content industry.

The second session showcased achievements in applying technology to digital newsroom management in Vietnam, presented by speakers from Vietnam Television, Vietnam Radio, Tuoi Tre Newspaper, and Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV). These included the application of artificial intelligence in news production, digital newsroom models and multi-platform content distribution, and digital content business management; as well as strategic content on building and developing data for the Southeast Asian journalism industry.

In his opening remarks at the workshop, Mr. Le Quoc Minh urged delegates to focus their discussions on deepening the scientific arguments behind the concept of a "digital newsroom," the scientific implications of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in current journalistic and media activities, particularly in the management of media organizations and media products.

Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hoai Bac - Director of the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology emphasized: "In the general trend of digital transformation across all sectors, digital transformation in journalism will become an inevitable trend. The essence of digital transformation in journalism is the application of increasingly modern technology to journalistic activities, enriching the digital journalism ecosystem with new, superior features, thereby improving the quality and effectiveness of communication."

Change your mindset - use smart technology.

Most speakers at the conference affirmed that technology cannot replace reporters and editors.

Journalist Le Xuan Trung, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper, believes that newsrooms must undergo digital transformation in a way that aligns with their development goals and strategies. Digital newsrooms need to leverage existing resources but be redesigned in a more systematic and efficient manner.

Journalist Dong Manh Hung, Head of the Editorial Secretariat of VOV, commented: "The most important change in digital transformation is a change in people, not a change in technology."

In addition, speakers also argued that without technology, journalism would not reach readers in the digital environment. Currently, major media organizations have recognized this and are investing heavily in developing digital products.

In his concluding remarks at the seminar, Mr. Le Quoc Minh highly appreciated the presentations and affirmed that the Vietnam Journalists Association will accompany media organizations in the digital transformation process. According to Mr. Minh, based on the actual situation, media organizations have a roadmap for digital transformation, building a suitable digital newsroom model. This begins with changing the mindset about the newsroom model, and then using technology intelligently to ensure confidentiality, ethics, and the shaping of public opinion by mainstream media organizations.
