Building new features for the journalism ecosystem
On August 17, the Vietnam Journalists Association coordinated with the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology to organize a workshop on applying technology in digital newsroom management.
The workshop was chaired by comrades: Le Quoc Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Hoai Bac, Director of the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology; Associate Professor, Dr. Do Thi Thu Hang, Head of the Professional Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Dr. Ta Bich Loan, Head of the Entertainment Program Production Department (VTV3), Vietnam Television.
The workshop is a forum for experts, journalists, and leaders of press agencies to identify technological trends and the inevitable trends that form digital newsroom models in the world in general and in press agencies in Vietnam in particular. Delegates discussed technological solutions in digital newsroom management; practical application of technology in digital newsroom management in Vietnam...
The workshop has two sessions. Session 1 has the topic of Technology solutions in digital newsroom management with presentations focusing on clarifying digital newsrooms in the context of digital transformation of journalism in Vietnam today; application of Blockchain technology in digital newsroom management; application of AI technology in automatic news and video production based on keywords; application of AI in digital content management.
The strategy of “Digital transformation of journalism to 2025, with a vision to 2030” was approved by the Prime Minister with the goal of building press agencies in a professional, humane, and modern direction; fulfilling the mission of information and propaganda to serve the revolutionary cause of the Party and the cause of national innovation; ensuring the role of leading and orienting public opinion, maintaining information sovereignty in cyberspace; effectively innovating readers' experiences; creating new sources of revenue; promoting the development of the digital content industry. |
The second session introduced achievements in applying technology in managing digital newsrooms in Vietnam by speakers from Vietnam Television, Voice of Vietnam, Tuoi Tre Newspaper, Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV) applying news production based on the strengths of artificial intelligence, digital newsroom models and multi-platform content distribution, digital content business management...; and the content of the strategy for building and developing data in the Southeast Asian press industry.
In his opening speech, Mr. Le Quoc Minh suggested that delegates focus on discussing and deepening the scientific arguments of the connotation of "digital newsroom", the scientific connotation of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in current press and media activities, especially in the management of press agencies and management of press and media products...
Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Hoai Bac - Director of the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology emphasized: “In the general trend of digital transformation of all sectors, digital transformation of journalism will become an inevitable trend. The essence of digital transformation of journalism is the application of increasingly modern technology to journalism activities, making the digital journalism ecosystem enriched with new and superior features, helping to improve the quality and effectiveness of communication.”
Changing mindset - using smart technology
Most of the speakers at the conference affirmed that technology cannot replace reporters and editors.
Journalist Le Xuan Trung - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper believes that newsrooms must digitally transform to suit their development goals and strategies. Digital newsrooms need to leverage existing resources but be redesigned in a more systematic and effective manner.

Journalist Dong Manh Hung - Head of VOV Editorial Secretariat commented: "The most important change in digital transformation is change in people, not change from technology."
In addition, the speakers also said that without technology, newspapers would not reach readers in the digital environment. Currently, major press agencies have realized this and are investing heavily in developing digital products.
In his closing remarks at the workshop, Mr. Le Quoc Minh highly appreciated the presentations and affirmed that the Journalists Association will accompany press agencies in the digital transformation process. According to Mr. Minh, based on the actual situation, press agencies have a roadmap for digital transformation, building a suitable digital newsroom model, first changing the mindset about the newsroom model, then using technology intelligently to ensure confidentiality, ethics and orientation of public opinion of mainstream press agencies.
