Strange story at the edge of the forest

Early one morning at the end of July, on their way to the forest to find medicinal herbs, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang and his wife La Thi Tham (40 years old, in Binh Khe commune, Dong Trieu district, Quang Ninh province) accidentally discovered a calf with unsteady legs, trembling and hiding in the bushes.

"Normally, the calf clings to its mother and when it sees people, it will run away, but that day, for some reason, when it saw us, it ran out, rubbing and rubbing against us, begging for food," said Ms. Tham. After many years of working in the forest, this was the first time she and her husband encountered such a strange thing.

The abandoned calf was taken in and raised by the couple like a family member (Video: NVCC).

According to Ms. Tham, local people often let the buffaloes roam the forest to find food, sometimes only visiting once every few months. Thinking that the mother buffalo was foraging nearby, Ms. Tham and her husband left.

"But near dusk, when we went down the mountain, my husband and I still saw the calf there, its legs shaking. We approached it and the animal suddenly ran over, nuzzling its head into my husband's body as if begging for food. At that time, we thought that maybe the animal had been lost by its mother and left at the edge of the forest," said Ms. Tham.

Having some cane sugar with her, Ms. Tham quickly mixed it with spring water for the calf to drink to regain strength.

"In the morning, my husband and I thought maybe the mother buffalo left her calf there to find food because this species does not leave its calf for such a long time. But when we returned in the evening, hearing the sound of our motorbike, the calf immediately ran over.

Before that, my husband and I saved some sugar, thinking that if we came back and saw the calf, we would give it some. That night, my husband posted an ad on groups in Quang Ninh to find the calf's owner.

However, 4 days later, still no one came to claim him. My husband and I decided to take him home to raise," Ms. Tham shared.

Having decided so, the whole way from the forest to home, Tham and her husband filmed a video, for fear that people would see them and say they had stolen the calf.

The female forest worker shared that since being brought home, the calf has adapted very quickly. It seems to be afraid of being abandoned again, the animal sticks close to the people in the house, not leaving. Especially with Mr. Quang, wherever the owner goes, the calf follows every step, rubbing against him.

Eight days later, Tham and her husband received a phone call from a local person claiming the calf. When the couple was about to return it, the owner suddenly changed his mind and decided to leave the animal with a family of forest workers to care for, fearing that the calf would not be compatible with the buffalo herd at home.

From then on, the abandoned calf officially became a member of Ms. Tham's family, named Map.

The calf clung to Mr. Quang's family, sometimes the animal lay down to let the boy rest his head on it to read a book (Photo: Character provided).

Mr. Quang shared that at home, Map is very smart and acts like a child. Map is affectionate, friendly, often lies down for his children to use as a pillow, put their feet up, and watch them read books...

"There were days when my husband and I went to the forest all day, the children were away, and the calf was home alone. At the end of the day, when we returned, we heard the sound of people and he ran out to look, looking as happy as a dog welcoming its owner. There was a day when I went to work and forgot to turn off the fan, when I came back I saw that he had chosen a place to lie down in front of the fan, looking very happy.

And strangely, Fatty always "poops" in the... toilet instead of in the garden like the dogs at home," Mr. Quang happily said.

Since the family had a new member, Mr. Quang and his wife regularly update photos of the family's daily activities and fun moments, such as when the father and son go fishing, the children take Map to catch crabs, etc. on social networks. Those simple clips receive a lot of interest and response from everyone.

He said that one day when the power went out and he hadn't posted a video yet, people were already eagerly commenting and asking why they hadn't seen Map's new video. Many of Map's "fans" even offered to ask for his account number to send money to help the forest couple raise the cute calf, but Quang's family refused.

"Although life is not abundant, my family can still take care of Map," said Mr. Quang.

The story of baby Map and Ms. Tham's family is known to many people. There have been many fake channels created to take advantage of the situation, Mr. Quang had to warn many times.

"There are channels that even have more followers than our "real channel". We don't know if the people who created those "fake channels" are trying to get views or for some other purpose. Every time we share videos about Map, those fake channels copy and post them.

Currently, my husband and I still make videos sharing our daily life with Map to bring joy to everyone. We do not call for donations or support, we hope everyone will be vigilant," said Ms. Tham.
