Africa unveils 10-point peace proposal to end Russia conflict

This is the first time Africa has joined mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine since the conflict between the two countries broke out in February 2022. The mission is particularly important for the continent, which relies heavily on food and fertilizer supplies from Russia and Ukraine.

The proposal includes a solution to the conflict, peaceful negotiations by diplomatic means, de-escalation of the situation, respect for the sovereignty of states and peoples in accordance with the UN Charter, ensuring security for all states, ensuring the export of grain, fertilizers and other goods.

According to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the conflict has had a serious impact on African countries by causing the price of grain and fertilizer to skyrocket.

"This is truly a historic mission in search of peace. We believe that this is a very complex process that requires all perspectives to be brought to the table. We are here to listen to the leaders of Russia and Ukraine. And we are making our efforts with deep respect. Even though African countries are thousands of kilometers away, Africa can feel the impact of this war," said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The African conciliation delegation, comprising the presidents of Senegal, South Africa and Zambia, along with the prime minister of Egypt and top envoys from the Republic of Congo and Uganda, represents a wide range of African perspectives on the conflict.

South Africa, a member of the BRICs group of developing economies along with Brazil, Russia, India and China, was among the countries that abstained in a UN vote last year condemning Russia’s special operations in Ukraine. Uganda, while a US ally on regional security in East Africa, has repeatedly stressed its friendship with Russia and its neutrality in the conflict in Ukraine.

China also proposed a peace proposal in late February, but Ukraine and its Western allies rejected the plan and the parties have yet to move closer to a ceasefire. However, with the neutral stance that African countries have shown for more than a year, the mediation role of African countries is expected to yield results.
