Although actress Nguyen Thu has not appeared much on screen in recent years, many audiences still remember her as the Roaring Lion in Stephen Chow's 2004 comedy classic Kung Fu Hustle .

According to 8Days, Nguyen Thu recently attended the 100-day celebration for actress Van Tuyet Nhi's grandchild with relatives and friends. Many viewers were surprised when they saw the Kung Fu Hustle star appear after a long time. "It seems like she has lost a lot of weight after filming Kung Fu Hustle, she doesn't look like a hot-tempered boss at all", "She looks so gentle"... The audience left comments.

The image of Bao To Ba, the landlady of the Chuong Heo boarding house, played by actress Nguyen Thu, often wearing a nightgown, smoking a cigarette and curling her hair, has left a deep impression on the audience's mind. Bao To Ba makes all tenants somewhat respectful and hesitant to greet her because she always looks fierce. Few people know that the landlady used to be a martial arts expert who has now disappeared, and was once known by the nickname "Little Dragon Girl".

In the film, the owner of the Pigsty boarding house successfully practiced the famous martial art "Lion's Roar" - a move that uses internal energy and qigong to make a sound to attack the opponent.

Born in 1948, Nguyen Thu studied martial arts since her childhood. Thanks to her hard work, she joined the "Seven Little Fortunes" group taught by martial artist Vu Chiem Nguyen and was the only female member of the group.

That year, Seven Little Fortunes gathered many famous names, including Yuen Long (Sammo Hung), Yuen Lau (Jackie Chan), Yuen Biao, Yuen Kui, Yuen Wah and Yuen Thu. They took the stage name with the word Yuen at the beginning to show their gratitude to their master.

While her career was on the rise, Nguyen Thu suddenly announced her retirement to focus on taking care of her family. The female artist married an ordinary office worker and held a quiet wedding. According to her, no matter how good a woman is at martial arts or how strong she is, she still needs a family.

After having two children, a boy and a girl, Nguyen Thu's marriage was on the brink of collapse. There were rumors that her husband had an affair, leading to an irreparable relationship. The actress won custody of her children after filing for divorce, but at the same time, she was under financial pressure.

Facing ups and downs in life, Stephen Chow suddenly appeared and invited Nguyen Thu to participate in his movie. To receive Nguyen Thu's nod, Stephen Chow encountered many difficulties.

The famous director personally met and persuaded her many times but was unsuccessful. The reason she was hesitant was because she had been "in hiding" for 18 years without participating in films. After all, the "King of Hong Kong Comedy" had enough prestige and trust to convince his senior.

Before filming the kung fu blockbuster, Stephen Chow asked Nguyen Thu to gain weight to play the role of the landlady. Within two months, Nguyen Thu successfully gained 15 kg and turned Tinh Gia's ideas into reality.

“He put his trust in me even though I refused. I had been out of the industry for so long, everyone knew how strict Stephen Chow was on set, I was afraid I wouldn’t do well enough. Because I was worried, I made a pact that he wouldn’t scold me, and if he did, it would be me. It was crazy to say that, but I didn’t expect him to agree,” Nguyen Thu shared.

Thanks to the success of Kung Fu Hustle , Nguyen Thu won Best Supporting Actress for her role as "Roaring Lion" at the Hundred Flowers and Golden Horse Awards in 2005.

At 73, Nguyen Thu lives alone, but has the consolation of having two grown-up, successful, and filial children. According to ET Today, her daughter manages a bank while her son works at the Department of Internal Affairs.
